NBC News begins layoffs as MSNBC separation process continues

NBC News began a round of layoffs on Wednesday as the company prepares to officially part ways with MSNBC.
A Fox News Digital insider said affected NBC News employees have been called into meetings to find out their fate. More than 100 employees are expected to be laid off.
The NewsGuild of New York, which represents nearly 6,000 media workers across the tri-state area, is unhappy with the decision to reduce headcount among rank-and-file employees.
“Instead of restructuring at the top, corporate profits are being maximized at the expense of our hard-working members who create the very value that drives NBC’s success,” New York NewsGuild President Susan DeCarava told Fox News Digital.

NBC and MSNBC have been closely allied for years with the latter’s progressive cable network relying on its sister’s newsgathering operation and talent. But Comcast announced last year that it would spin off MSNBC and other cable networks into a separate company, now called Versant.
Earlier this month, NBC News employees who accepted a new role at MSNBC moved on to their new jobs. MSNBC has also stopped relying on NBC News from an operations standpoint, aside from coverage in Washington, D.C., which will continue to be present through October 20, a network insider told Fox News Digital.

Once MSNBC fully distances itself from Washington, D.C. operations on October 20, MSNBC will no longer participate in NBC News-led editorial calls and meetings. Once the move is complete, MSNBC will operate independently from NBC News for the first time in its 30-year history.
As a result, NBC News began reducing its workforce.
