Nearly all US fireworks come from China as industry battles high tariffs

With their almost dependent on Chinese imports, American fireworks companies fell directly at the intersection of President Donald Trump’s trade war with Beijing.

China manufactures 99 % of its fireworks in the backyard and about 90 % of professional offers that dazzle the sky all over the world.

The American fireworks industry warns that the 30 % customs tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese imports can give up preparations for the country’s birthday 250 next year.

In April, the customs tariff rate increased to 145 % for fireworks, as Washington and Beijing escalated commercial threats. The following month, Trump implemented a 90 -day stand, reducing the tariff to 30 %. This temporary decline is scheduled to end on July 9.

“The current rate is still excessively high and unpredictable,” Julie Heakman, Executive Director of the American Fireworks Association, told Fox Business. “Will the tariff remain 30 % in place, or will it explode into triple numbers?”

Heckman explained that the fireworks industry usually puts requests several months ago to calculate obstacles in the complex and sensitive supply chain of safety in this industry. Fireworks require multiple patterns of transportation – ships, trains and trucks – with safety inspections and organizational checks in each step.

Roberto Surgi, who runs an American fireworks company, said one of his orders – a few thousand cases – was slapped with a 145 % tariff.

“It was not a good success for us, but at the end of the day, we will lose it completely and remove it in our stocks, because we were unable to transfer this to our customers,” Surgei said.

He added that consumers can expect a price rise in price in 2025.

“Come on New Year’s Eve, we are looking for an average increase from 20 % to 40 % on most elements,” Surgi said. “The definitions will affect our show customers more than others,” Surgi said, adding that fireworks shows may be shorter.

“The unfortunate thing, at the end of the day, the consumer ends with the price of these definitions,” Surgi said of the ongoing trade war. “We are just imposing taxes on ourselves to celebrate our great nation.”
