Netflix’s Gleefully Violent And Surreal R-Rated Comedy An All-Star Laugh

Absurd satire is by far my favorite type of media, and it’s even better when it’s done with proper financial backing and clean production, like 2019 did. The dead don’t dieto really sell it. The dead don’t die This hits the sweet spot and delivers a brilliant double feature in 2004 Shaun of the Dead. While both films are zombie comedy flicks, the latter leans more into slapstick and comedy The dead don’t die It comes close to M. Night Shyamalan’s grossly misunderstood big-budget film, EventMeaning it plays things completely straight. Thanks to Adam Driver, Bill Murray, and Chloë Sevigny, we’re introduced into a world of complete chaos where beats are fed to us through news bumps and blatant exposition drops used solely for comedic effect.

You can sit back while clenching your fists at how indifferent everyone is because they already know “it won’t end well,” and you’re about to find out what everyone means by that.

Cliff was withdrawn because, as is constantly the case, he was supposed to retire two years early. Ronnie, the most level-headed officer, has a knack for describing every situation conclusively and accurately with an almost enviable lack of emotional attachment. They’re joined by Chloe Sevigny’s officer, Mindy Morrison, who’s newest on the force but really doing her best. Rounding out the lineup is Tilda Swinton’s Zelda Winston, an eccentric mortician with a samurai streak whose sword never leaves her side.

The dead don’t die He presents his struggle through news outlets reporting strange animal behavior and people being attacked by their friendly pets. After learning that polar fracking has changed the Earth’s rotation, the officers realize what’s at stake: the dead are coming back to life and are slowly taking over. Knowing only “Kill the Head”, the crew proceeds to assess the extent of their corruption, with Ronnie repeating his signature refrain, “This won’t end well.”

Self-realization in the best way

Driver, Murray, Sevigny, and Swinton give you little more than a confused “huh” as the world around them crumbles and they realize they’ll have to deal with things on their own. The only person who seems remotely prepared is Bobby Wiggins (Caleb Landry Jones), a gas station attendant who knows his horror movies and exactly how to arm himself. The film plays out at a normal “okay, what do we do now” pace as our heroes try to put things together. They know they’re in trouble, but they’re a small-town police force with limited resources and no clear sense of how widespread the disease is. Ironically, Cliff and Ronnie are extremely competent, and most of the humor comes from them treating each increasingly ridiculous situation like it’s just another day on patrol while bickering over Sturgill Simpson’s aptly titled song “The Dead Don’t Die,” which is played frequently to ensure we never forget what we’re watching.

A refreshing spin on zombie tropes

A fun way to revitalize the zombie archetypes we’ve been tired of for years, The dead don’t die Dry, dark and deceptively charming. It operates on pure horror movie logic, giving you a lot to latch on to emotionally, even when the characters remain laughably detached.
