Netflix’s Sci-Fi Action Fantasy Is One Of The Best Comic Book Movies Ever

Written by Zach Zagranis | Published

When most people complain about “superhero fatigue,” they’re specifically referring to the films produced by Marvel and DC. When it comes to a weird movie like HellboyWell, it’s hard to get sick from something so rare. If you haven’t taken the time to catch up on BPRD, you can stream Hellboy now on Netflix.

What are you waiting for, an engraved invitation from Rasputin himself?

Hellboy Not your typical superhero movie. In fact, it’s not a superhero movie at all. It’s like Indiana Jones by way of Lovecraft, with some Buffy the Vampire Slayer Thrown on top for good measure. Oh, and the “hero” is literally an inferno destined to bring about the end of the world. Spider-ManThis is not so.

Hellboy Based on the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name. Created by comic book writer and artist Mike Mignola. This makes Hellboy one of the few comic book characters not created by the Big Two to reach any kind of mainstream popularity. The only other independent comic characters to have major success in Hollywood were Hellboy, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and possibly Spawn.

The film’s plot begins during World War II. The Nazis, in collaboration with Rasputin, yes, Rasputin, are trying to summon the Eldritch terror man known as Ogdru Jahad to help them crush the Allied forces. The ritual is interrupted by a team of allies led by young scientist Trevor Brutenholm, and instead of a dollar store, Cthulhu, the little demon, crosses into our world. Brutenholm names the demon Hellboy and adopts the child as his own.

Sixty years later, Hellboy is a cigar-chomping, kitten-loving, beer-drinking member of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). The BPRD routinely investigates supernatural events and protects the world from supernatural entities that threaten its existence. Hellboy and his teammates, Psycho Fishman Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman, are forced to stop a newly resurrected Rasputin from finishing what he started in World War II.

Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola shopped Hellboy A film that has been around Hollywood for years before anyone gave the film the green light. Several studios passed on the project due to del Toro’s unwillingness to compromise on his vision for what it was Hellboy It should be so from It should be Hellboy.

Studios weren’t keen on Ron Perlman heading up a major Hollywood production, but del Toro knew in his heart that Perlman was born to play Hellboy and wouldn’t budge. Any Hellboy fan will tell you that del Toro was right. Ron Perlman is Hellboy in the same way Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man. The role and the actor were practically made for each other.

Fortunately, Sony agreed, and… Hellboy He finally got the green light to shoot in 2003. The film was shot six days a week for 130 days, from Monday to Saturday. Guillermo del Toro reserved Sundays for editing.

The director did his best to show all the events as if they were a Ray Harryhausen film, using almost no camera movement and using wide shots. The stop-motion legend had a huge influence on del Toro as a director, and this was the director’s way of paying homage to Harryhausen and his unique stop-motion monsters.

Hellboy reception

Aside from Perelman, Hellboy The cast includes Selma Blair as Liz Sherman and John Hurt as Hellboy’s adoptive father. Famed creature actor Doug Jones brought the amphibian Abe Sapien to life, although his voice was later dubbed by David Hyde Pierce from Freezer Fame. Hyde Pierce refused to be credited in the film because he considered the character of Abby Jones first and foremost.

Hellboy It was released theatrically on April 2, 2004. The film’s theatrical gross was less than $100 million against a budget of $66 million. Not too shabby considering all the controversy surrounding the film’s name.

Hell may seem like the most benign of expletives, but some theaters refused to show the film because of it. Some theaters in the southern United States put “Helloboy” on their screens in order to avoid sacrilegious implications.

Some theaters even dropped Hellboy entirely over Easter even though the film is still in the middle of its theatrical run.

Hellboy sequel and reboot

Port David

Both critics and audiences loved Hellboy, and the film did well enough to spawn a sequel. Hellboy II: The Golden Armyin 2008. The franchise was rebooted in 2019 with a film (again) titled Hellboy, championship Strange things Star David Harbor in Red makeup and horns instead of Ron Perlman.

Harbor did a respectable job, but audiences couldn’t separate the role of Hellboy from Ron Perlman’s. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Perelman He is Hellboy.

If you’re looking for a comic that’s more like “gothic fairytale” than “glowy, grown-up MacGuffin in colorful spandex,” check this out Hellboy On Netflix. You will not be disappointed.
