24 years after its sudden cancellation Stargate UniverseThe beloved sci-fi franchise is back, thanks to Amazon. The giant acquired the rights to the entire franchise when it bought MGM in 2022, and since then, there have been rumors of a new series coming to Amazon Prime Video. Today, it’s been confirmed, Stargate will return as a live-action series being promoted as its own entry in the series, with new showrunner, Martin Gero, clearly saying: “It’s not a reboot.” Long-suffering fans have waited decades for more successful franchises, and the rest of today’s news proves that the wait was worth it.

The original Stargate creative team is back

The original crew of Stargate SG-1

First, it’s the fact that Martin Gero is the new showrunner. Jiro got his start in Hollywood Stargate Atlantis He will continue to write episodes for each series in the series, direct the Atlantis episode “Brain Storm,” and even serve as a creative consultant for the back half of the series. Stargate SG-1. If anyone wants to bring the series back, it should be the person who helped bring this series back to life in the first place, which is why it’s especially impressive that Gero isn’t the only one returning to Stargate Command.

before SG-1, Stargate It was a hugely successful sci-fi action film directed by Roland Emmerich, and now, 31 years after the portal first opened, Emmerich has returned to the Amazon series. He’s joined by his longtime collaborator Dean Devlin, who not only worked on the original film but has gone on to craft a generation of fun, light-hearted cable shows, including impact and Librarians. If anyone is going to get the unique tone of Stargate right, it’ll be these three.

Until then, they are not alone. Brad Wright, co-creator of the Stargate TV universe, serves as a consultant, and during Amazon’s event, he made it clear that his goal is to do things they couldn’t do in 1997. He echoed Gero’s enthusiastic statement that the new show won’t rely on 350 episodes of accumulated lore, but can be enjoyed in a new way, and then, he hopes, everyone will want to go back and watch the franchise from the beginning.

The possibilities are endless

Stargate Universe

Beyond the creative team, little is known about Amazon’s new Stargate series. Will the shutdown save the Destiny crew from? Stargate Universe? Will we return to Atlantis and the ghosts? Will we get to see the officers of Stargate Command again, and after all these years, will we meet General Samantha Carter? More importantly, will every planet look like Vancouver?

Given how each show ended, there’s a lot to develop for the new series, even if it’s an entry point for newcomers. The Goa’uld and Ori stories ended in straight-to-DVD movies, communication and The coffin of truthBut who can say that another System Master did not appear in the following years? Stargate Universe Reveal more about the ancients, and who knows what technology is out there, waiting to fall into the wrong hands.

Stargate fans have a lot to speculate about since the new series is still in an early stage of development, and there is no release date. There’s no cast, no setting, and no characters, but none of that matters, because finally, 14 years after the series went on hiatus, fans can celebrate. Stargate is back.
