Nextdoor redesigns app with AI recommendations, local news, and real-time emergency alerts

The NextDoor social application launches a re -designed version of its new “New NextDoor” service. The app adds local news, actual time alerts, and an Amnesty International feature called “FAVES” designed to discover local companies and spots. Nextdoor has also updated its general design to look more contemporary.

It has been launched 15 years ago, and Nextdoor has long worked as a famous platform for neighborhood conversations, helping users communicate with things such as recommendations for plumbing and suggestions for nearby dining places. In the end, his growth stopped and his participation decreased as the platform became related to jobs that contain misinformation and racism.

Now, the company is looking to change matters and attract more users by making its platform more useful, useful and timely. With this redesign, NextDoor is looking to increase the quality and amount of local information on the platform, said CEO of Nextdoor and co -founder Niav Tolia told Techcrunch.

To provide news to its platform, Nextdoor has made a partnership with 3,500 local publications across the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The prominent ports include San Francisco Standard, The London Standard and Toronto Star.

“The reason this is very important to us is historically. Nextdoor has relied 100 % on the content created by users, only the content created by your neighbors,” said Tolia. “This has been a great source of information. However, to make sure that this happens in your area, we need to bring local news as well. So this is the first time that we have allowed third -party publishers to use our distribution.”

Tolia stated that these are not commercial agreements, because NextDoor does not pay for the content, and publishers pay the company. In addition, NextDoor does not host content; It simply displays a title, extract, image and directing traffic to the publications. Users will be able to discuss the news in the comments section under each post.

Tolia noted that publishers are only the first new type of next content to Nextdoor, where the platform plans to allow small companies, schools and institutions to have an original article in the application in the future as well.

Regarding new alerts, Nextdoor now displays actual time updates on things such as weather, traffic, power outages, storms and forest fires. These alerts will appear on a dynamic neighborhood map, allowing neighbors to take timely conversations about safety and preparation.

The service cooperates with Samdesk and Weather.com, which includes the Weather and Weather.com channel, to run these alerts.

“When something is definitely worth paying attention to, we call that yellow condition, and we will put this alert at the top,” said Tulia. “When there is a decisive thing, we call that the red situation and will control the entire application, because at this point, you do not care about the talks that the neighbors face about the pickle. You are not really concerned with reviewing the new restaurant that local publishers have developed. You need to meet with your neighbors and help save each other in some cases.”

Tolia noted that these alerts are very branched because Nextdooor is based on a spatial geographical platform. Unlike amber alerts that are sent to everyone on a specific location, Nextdoor says he can customize their alerts to the home. For example, if there is a power outage, the application will only send the alert to the people whose strength comes out.

As for the launch of Fakes, Tolia says that neighbors’ recommendations are more valuable than going to Google or Chatgpt when searching for a local restaurant or place to spend time with the family during the weekend, which is why Nextdooor launch this feature. The new FAVES feature displays coordinated lists of recommendations, and also allows you to ask specific questions to obtain suggestions.

“We have LLM for every neighborhood in which we took 15 years of current conversations and we can now answer questions about this information in a really convincing way,” said Tolia. “So we have the first, as far as we know, the first local Amnesty International to operate neighborhoods.”

You can ask questions such as, “What is the best place to walk with children?” And get a quick response and summarize the information withdraws from the posts from real users on Nextdoor. Under the summary, you can see and click to the posts that the summary indicates.

“This content is owned by Nextdooor,” said Tolia. “We never shared it. It was not indexed by Google. It is not available on ChatGPT, and again, because we know where to live, we can target information to you in the most relevant way.”

Tolia has noticed that the unique value of Nextdoor is in digitization and capture a local word, which is the type of horror information that is not available through platforms like Google or Chatgpt, because you can only get it from direct conversations.

“Give a funny example on, if you want to know all the parking of lemon juice in which children work in your area, you cannot go to Google Maps and find it,” said Tolia. “You cannot go to Chatgpt and ask this question, isn’t it?
