Kevin Bacon’s Cult Classic ’90s Monster Movie Surges On Prime Video’s Top Charts

Everyone loves a good horror movie during the month of October, but sometimes it can be difficult to find the right movie for the whole family to watch together. Some movies are very scary, others are very violent, while older family members may not be in the mood to watch a film like “The Nightmare Before Christmas” for the hundredth time. This is where “Tremors” comes in. This brutal 1990 horror film was a complete bomb at the box office, mostly panned by critics, but has since become a cult classic that spawned the entire “Tremors” franchise.

“Tremors” stars Kevin Bacon as Val Mackey, a handyman in a small Nevada town who works with his partner Earl (Fred Ward). Along with the rest of the residents of Perfection City, they must try to survive an invasion of recently awakened prehistoric subterranean worms, and that’s when things get wild. The film is currently topping Prime Video’s streaming charts (via FlixPatrol), which isn’t really surprising since it’s the perfect Halloween film for audiences of almost all ages.

The tremors are a complete blast from start to finish

Although “Tremors” contains a bit of swearing and some general danger, it’s not that gruesome for a brutal horror film, making it a good choice for younger audiences. Not only that, but it’s also wonderfully funny, mixing laughter and fear in just the right amounts to ensure that “Tremors” remains terrifying. The basic concept of an underground worm that can sense movements on the ground results in a “the floor is lava” theme running through many of the film’s characters, which is sure to delight kids. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of adult humor for parents to enjoy. On top of that, there’s Reba McEntire as the world’s most armed survivalist with a heart of gold, and she and her husband (played by Michael Gross) provide plenty of great moments to round out Val and Earl’s adventures.

Not only does “Tremors” have a great human cast delivering great one-liners, but the Graboid worm puppets are great as well, with excellent practical effects work from Amalgamated Dynamics. What’s more fun than a bunch of silly humans fighting giant foam monsters? Not much, which is probably why “Tremors” was such a huge success despite its initially poor reception, and viewers on Prime Video ate it up. Bacon certainly thought his career would never recover after “Tremors” completely failed, but he’s basically become a staple of blockbuster films from the ’80s and ’90s at this point, and “Tremors” is one of his best films.
