The Nobel Committee awarded this year’s Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado amid calls for president Donald Trump to receive the award following his brokering of a historic agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Trump has received several high-profile nominations since returning to office. However, the committee’s deadline for nominations was January 31, meaning he may be eligible for next year’s award.

During a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Trump was asked about the Nobel Peace Prize, but he did not comment on the award in his response. Instead, he focused on the possibility of addressing the Israeli Knesset.

Earlier this week, the Forum for Hostages and Missing Families, a group representing families of hostages and victims of terrorism that was formed after October 7, appealed to the committee on Trump’s behalf.

“In the past year, no leader or organization has contributed more to peace around the world than President Trump,” the forum wrote in an October 6 letter to the committee. “While many have spoken eloquently about peace, he has achieved it. While others have made empty promises, he has achieved tangible results that have saved countless lives.”

“He not only talked about peace, but he achieved it,” the forum added.

Trump has been praised as a peacemaker worthy of a Nobel Prize for the “historic” peace deal between Israel and Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Trump in July during a visit to Washington, D.C., that he had nominated the president for the Nobel Peace Prize. Netanyahu delivered the letter he sent to the committee to Trump when he informed him of the news.

“The president has already seized great opportunities,” Netanyahu said. “He crafted the Abraham Accords. He is making peace, as we speak, in one country and in one region after another.” “So, I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. It nominates you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved.”

Weeks before that meeting, the United States and Israel carried out major operations that destroyed Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, with both countries warning that a nuclear Tehran would pose a threat to the world.

Trump had been nominated for the award in the past but was not selected. It is worth noting that US Representative Claudia Tenney, from New York State, nominated Trump for the award in 2020 when he mediated the Abraham Accords to normalize relations between Israel and the Arab countries.

If he had won, Trump would have become the fifth US president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Past winners include former President Barack Obama, former President Jimmy Carter, former President Woodrow Wilson, and former President Theodore Roosevelt.
