OpenAI Just Released Its First Open-Weight Models Since GPT-2

Openai dropped the first open weight models in more than five years. The two linguistic models, GPT -SS-120B and GPT -SS-20B can operate locally on consumer devices and are set for specific purposes. For Openai, they represent a shift away from its recent strategy of focusing on royal versions, as the company moves towards a broader and more open collection of artificial intelligence models available to users.
“We are excited to make this model, as a result of billions of dollars in research, available to the world to obtain Amnesty International in the hands of most of the possible people,” Sam Altman, CEO of Openai in an e -mail. Both GPT -SS-120B and GPT-SS-20B are officially available for free download on Face Huging, a famous hosting platform for artificial intelligence tools. The Openai GPT-2 was the last open weight model in 2019.
What distinguishes the open weight model is the fact that its “weight” is available to the public, which means that anyone can take a look at the inner parameters to get an idea of how to process information. Instead of undermining the Openai models with a free option, the founder Greg Brockman sees this “supplement” version of the company’s paid services, such as the application programming interface currently used by many developers. “Open weight models have a completely different range of strengths,” Brockman said in a briefing with the reporters. Unlike ChatGPT, you can run the GPT-SS without internet connection and behind the protection wall.
Both GPT -Ss uses thinking methods in a series, which was first published Openai in its O1 model last fall. Instead of just giving outputs, this approach has the gynecological tools that pass through multiple steps to answer a claim. These new text models are not only multimedia, but can browse the web, connect the cloud -based models to help tasks, implement software instructions, and mobility in programs as Amnesty International. Smaller than the two models, GPT -SS-20B, is compressed enough to operate locally on the consumer with more than 16 GB of memory.
The new model of Openai is available under APache 2.0 license, which is a common option for open weight models. With APache 2.0, models can be used for commercial purposes, redistributing them, and insert them as part of other licensed programs. QWEN Open -weight models from Alibaba as well as Mistral also work under APache 2.0.
It was publicly announced in March, the issuance of these open models was initially postponed to conduct more safety test. The launch of an open-weight model is likely to be more dangerous than a closed version because it removes barriers around who can use the tool, and anyone can try to adjust a copy of GPT -SS for unintended purposes.
In addition to the assessments that Openai usually run on its ownership models, the startup company has allocated the open weight option to see how it can be misused by a “bad actor” that downloads the tool. “We have refined the model internally in these risk areas. We valued the extent of our height,” said Eric Wallace, a safety researcher at Openai. In Openai tests, the open weight model did not reach a high level of risk, as it was measured through the framework of preparation.
