OpenAI to allow ChatGPT erotica content for verified adult users soon

CEO Sam Altman announced on Tuesday that OpenAI will soon lower restrictions on the content that ChatGPT can produce, allowing the service to create “erotica” if users so desire.

Altman noted that the new functionality will only be applied to users who explicitly request it. He said the current limitations on ChatGPT were a result of being overly cautious about mental health, but he now believes the language model can “treat adult users like adults.”

“Now that we can mitigate serious mental health issues and have new tools, we will be able to safely ease restrictions in most cases,” Altman wrote.

He continued: “In a few weeks, we plan to roll out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a character that behaves like what people like in 4o (hopefully better!). If you want ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, use lots of emojis, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it to, not because we We increase usage.

“In December, as we fully roll out age recognition and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow more, such as sexual arousal for verified adults,” he said.

Altman went on to explain that users “will only get it if you ask for it” regarding functionality.

The announcement comes about a month after OpenAI introduced new ChatGPT features aimed at creating a safer experience for teens.

The enhanced protection for teens allows parents to link their ChatGPT account to their teen’s account, control how ChatGPT responds to their teen with typical age-appropriate behavior rules and manage which features will be disabled, including memory and chat history, the company said in a blog post.

“We prioritize safety over privacy and freedom for teens; this is powerful new technology, and we believe minors need significant protection,” Altman said in a statement last month.

Parents will also receive notifications when the system detects their teen is experiencing a moment of extreme distress, a feature that OpenAI says will be guided by expert input.

“If a user under 18 is having suicidal thoughts, we will attempt to contact the users’ parents, and if we are unable, we will contact the authorities in the event of imminent harm,” Altman wrote.
