Ozempic May Be Less Effective for Emotional Eaters, Study Suggests

GLP-1 stimuli-“Wondering drugs” such as OzemPIC or Wegovy that help individuals reduce blood sugar levels and weight loss, among other things-important results for some patients, but not all. People’s motives may play excessive eating a role in this, according to a new study.
To investigate the reason why some people did not benefit from the GLP-1 oppositions as much as others benefit from, the researchers noticed 92 participants with type 2 diabetes in Japan during their first year of taking GLP-1. Their results, published today at the border in clinical diabetes and health care, indicate that people who eat food for external reasons – such as a scene or the smell of delicious food – were more chances to respond well for long -term drugs than people who eat for emotional reasons.
Who will benefit more than GLP-1 medications?
“The pre-treatment assessment of eating patterns may help predict those who benefit more than the treatment of GLP-1 receptors,” said Daisuki Yap, the author of the study, a professor of diabetes, mystery and nutrition at Kyoto University. “GLP-1 receptors stimulants are effective for individuals with weight gain or high blood glucose levels due to excessive food eating out of external stimuli. However, their effectiveness is less expecting in cases where emotional eating is the main cause.”
The team revealed this by collecting data about the body weight and composition of the participants, the diet, and information such as glucose in the blood, cholesterol levels, and the relationship with food at the beginning of treatment, after three months, and after one year. They have focused on emotional eating (eating in response to negative emotions), and external eating (eating because food looks good), and restricts food (controlling the diet for weight loss). While this may seem contradictory, excessive excessive eating can actually lead to turbulent food, according to researchers.
Throughout the year, the participants have seen a statistically significant loss of body weight, lower cholesterol levels, and body fat levels without changing structural muscle mass. While the blood glucose levels have improved, the improvement was not statistically significant. However, there were some differences depending on eating behaviors. Three months after the start of treatment, the participants reported more restricted food and external or emotional eating. By the end of the year, the participants returned to their original and emotional eating habits.
“One of the possible explanations is that emotional eating is more strongly affected by psychological factors that may not be treated directly through the remedy of GLP-1 receptors,” said Tacherao Kato, the second author of the article and a researcher from the University of Givo, said, “Individuals with prominent emotional eating inclinations may require additional or psychological support.”
External food shrinks throughout the year of treatment
Participants reported the decrease in external eating throughout the entire year, and the individuals who demanded high levels of external eating at the beginning of treatment witnessed the largest benefits in blood glucose levels and weight loss. On the other hand, the team has not determined any connection between emotional or restricted eating degrees at the beginning and advantages of drugs through the 12 -month mark.
“While our study indicates that there is a possible relationship between external eating behavior and the response to treatment for GLP-1 receptors, these results remain primary,” Yap explained. Yap concluded that “there are other necessary evidences before being implemented in clinical practice. If it is possible that the future experiences controlled by this relationship, which includes simple behavioral assessments that can become a valuable component in improving treatment strategies.”
