City of Miami signs onto deal with ICE: ‘Keep the American people safe’

The city’s commissioners in Miami, Florida, voted 3-2 on Tuesday to allow police officers to work with immigration and customs enforcement.
The city has entered the 287 (g) partnership with ICE, which is used by different cities to help in the federal application using different ways. It is a sharp contradiction with some governments across the United States, especially in major cities, which do not allow local or governmental authorities to help impose immigration laws.
“We appreciate our partnerships with law enforcement and local states, and the success of the 287 G program (g) allows the multiplication of force in enforcement of immigration laws,” an ICE spokesman said in a statement. “This full approach to the government enables law enforcement partners to protect cities throughout the country from public safety and national security threats, and we encourage others across the country to join.”

In February, state governor Ron Desantis issued a state enforcement executive at the state level to create agreements with ICE to help deport the Trump administration.
“Florida is an example of countries in combating illegal immigration and working with the Trump administration to restore the rule of law,” Desantis said at that time. “By allowing state agents and law enforcement employees to train and approve them by ICE, Florida will now get more enforceable employees to help help federal partners. This means that deportations can be carried out more efficiently, making our societies safer with the removal of illegal foreigners.”
However, there was an opposition to entering the agreement from some population and groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the Migrant Coalition in Florida.

“This is a shameful day for Miami,” said Daryl Gomez, a state level with the US Civil Liberties Union in Florida in a press statement. “With their vote, Commissioners chose to fear the facts, and to divide the unit. This agreement will not make us safer – it will only spread fear and isolate people who make our city strong.”

Tessa Betty, Executive Director of the Migrant Coalition in Florida, said in a statement “287 (G) does not belong to any city, but especially in Miami – a place formed by the immigrants, which the immigrants built and bid against the immigrants.” “More than half of our population is born abroad. The Commissioners who voted to implement this harsh program have turned their back on the society that was placed in their positions of protection. They turn our diversity into a goal.”
However, the White House told Fox News that the city’s decision was ultimately the right step.

“President Trump’s promise to deport illegal foreigners from the main plate of his business schedule to make America is safe again. The administration is always grateful with government and local officials to remove dangerous criminals from the streets and maintain the safety of the American people.” The White House spokeswoman, Abyel Jackson.

In April, a huge ICE operation in cooperation with the Florida authorities arrested 1120 illegal immigrants, and the agency said that 63 % of them were “arrests or criminal convictions present”, and many have claimed gangs.
