Progressives push DEI, anti-Israel measures in national defense bill

The House of Representatives is preparing to take over the annual defense policy bill this week, as Democrats have made hundreds of amendments – which many aim to reprimand the administration of President Donald Trump and the priorities of the current Republican Party.

Legislators submitted approximately 450 amendments to the National Defense Defense Act 2026 (NDAA). Among them are the measures dealing with diversity, the financing of Israel and Trump’s suppression of illegal immigration.

The House of Representatives Rules Committee will review the draft law on Monday afternoon and appoint criteria for discussion, which paves the way for the floor to vote later this week.

Most of the progressive adjustments are unlikely to survive, confirming its symbolic nature. However, Democrats use the defense package of the two traditional parties to highlight the opposition to the White House and the Republican leadership.

Representative Yasmine Crocate, D-Texas made several modifications, including one to strike a NDAA ban on the use of defense funds for diversity, fairness and integration (Dei).

Likewise, actors Luz Rivas, California, Gil Tokoda, De Hawaii made a modification to prevent the prohibition of Dei programs in the Pentagon.

Crochet also presented a language aimed at stopping the construction of migrant detention facilities on military facilities, directly challenging the Trump administration policy.

The Pentagon announced last month that it was building the largest federal detention center in the country in Fort Place, Texas.

Representative Delia Ramirez, D-Ell, made two amendments targeting immigration policies dating back to the Trump era. One can prohibit funding for family separation, while “another prevents the use of money to transfer non -citizens to foreign prisons, with the exception of laws of treaties and delivery laws,” according to the website of the rules committee. The latest proposal would prevent deportation to El Salvador.

Actor Rashida Tille, de Mish, and Ilhan Omar, Die Min, provided measures aimed at reducing American support to Israel.

NDAA is a draft law that was passed every fiscal year that defines the national security and defense policy of the US government.

More than 1,000 total amendments were made on the bill this year.
