Simon Adingra’s strike from Granit Xhaka’s superb pass gave the hosts – who had not lost at home in the league since their return to the division – the lead in the 28th minute in a thrilling encounter.

Leeds’ Brenden Aaronson then had a shot cleared off the line by Trae Hume before Brian Probbe headed against the crossbar from Adingra’s cross during first-half extra time.

Calvert-Lewin scored in a move involving all 11 visiting players, equalizing within two minutes of the second half, moving the Whites seven points clear of the relegation zone and extending their unbeaten run to five matches.

Perhaps the draw reflects the balance of a seesaw match that contains great offensive ambition on both sides, as Sunderland, who have now gone three matches unbeaten after drawing their last two matches, remain in seventh place.
