Rachel Corsi, the captain of Scotland, will retire from football after the upcoming Nations League matches against Austria and the Netherlands.

The defender, who has 154 capsules for the national side, was called to the team by the new coach Melissa Andreta last week.

However, a series of injuries has left her in “chronic pain” and after six surgeries – including five on her left knee – Corcy now admits that the time for retirement.

Corsi returned to work from her last knee operation in April, four months after the scheme.

She added: “The surgeon told me, before the surgery, that the condition of my knee was somewhat worrying and that the surgery is likely to give some relief, but there is a great possibility that the damage that occurred over the course of my career has been effective in the rest of my life.

“The specific moment I learned that there was a specific injury that would have penetrated me, I wanted to perform surgery because I knew that I could not return to play, leaving the matter as it was.

“I was primarily in chronic pain all the time, like walking up and falling on the stairs, sitting in the car for time, going to the toilet, getting out of the bathroom and having to climb over the bathroom, like all these little things, like that they are daily things that are not normal for me now.

“When you tolerate it in sports, and when you go and do your training, you are ready to accept a level of pain and discomfort, but I think it is the rest of your day as it may affect you more mentally because there is no comfort for that.

“I would like to say that the first half of the season, especially from October to January – this was a much more difficult journey.

“You have made a lot of rehabilitation, and I find that its process is almost famous at times because you only follow the steps and get there, and you feel satisfied as soon as you get there.

“The mental challenge for that, emotional pressure and knowing this can now be your last year, and you will not return to that – I think this is very difficult.

“This is not the end that anyone wants, as you don’t really get to say your conditions to any degree.

“It also came out of the back of the previous season – I was available for every game and played in every club game and all the cup games, and one bar, where it was suspended, which I will also add that this is the only game in my higher career, which I told, and that was suspended!

“It was a difficult journey. There were a few other small channels, and it is really common. It was frustrated in itself. I made it and it was worth it all the days.”
