Kramer said he believed Trump is more frustrated than previous departments of what he sees allows China to benefit from the American trade policy more than he is with president Xi Jinping himself, whom Trump continues to talk with respect. Kramer acknowledged that he was sympathetic to Trump’s goal, he warned that the country was not ready to deal with the repercussions. “As a nation, a shameful, we have been addicted to cheap Chinese imports,” he said.
“I think what we saw today was the beginning of the screening period between those who do not have exposure to China and those that do. Unfortunately, those who use many people and they are excellent companies, but they may not be excellent enough to overcome it through this new environment and this is a real shame.”
Kramer stressed that although he believes the United States can work without economic relations with China, doing this would significantly raise local costs, increase unemployment, and excessive dependence on other global partners. He said the risks are enormous. “Yes, we have to take them now or never,” he said, but he warned that the consequences will involve more pain than the audience is likely to be ready to accept it.
