REAL ID draws new attention to America’s contentious relationship with the DMV

The most striking identity requirements are to take over the strength of the population next week after 20 years of delay. For many, the law will require a visit to one of the most famous places in the country, which was a reputation in the nation, which was useful for time: the auto department.

These facilities can differ slightly in the name and in a shortcut: for example, they have the Public Safety Department or DPS; They are called Floridian, the Safety Department on Roads, Cars, or HSMV. (Add to the DDS, BMV and MVD mixture, it’s a real alphabet soup.)

Despite the various names, each of the state’s facilities serves the same purpose: licensing drivers and issuing identity cards for residents who live in the state. They share the same waiting times and insult the same feelings of burden and hatred.

But for individuals in some states, things are about to become much worse and fast.

On May 7, all American population will be asked to show a “real compatible with identity” form to identify any trips, including international and home travel, or enter any federal buildings in accordance with a long federal law approved by congress in 2005.

The real identifier is a driving license issued by the state or an identity card issued by the state that meets some federal standards, and requires individuals to provide additional documents, such as many documents that prove residency in the current state-the agreement of facilities and rental contract, for example-in addition to an accredited birth certificate, among other things.

Real identifiers are now released by all state DMVs (or BMVS or HSMVS) in anticipation of the date of rapid implementation. Identity and licensing cards compatible with real identifiers are distinguished with a star or another symbol in the right angle, and some states, including Texas and Florida, have been released for years.

But since DMVs is running in the state, not the federal level, compliance with the most optional verification criteria was until recently. This has pushed a set of compliance throughout the United States and recently panic from the population in countries that DMVS did not meet real identity standards.

In the last days before the new implementation, some residents learn for us for the first time, for their horror, that their identity does not reach irony.

This has led to an increase in the appointments at the last minute in some states where drivers look feverish to obtain these new identifiers. In other cases, it is almost impossible to obtain appointments.

For example, New Jersey has no dates available in any DMV facilities in the state. This could be a big problem for travelers in a state park, whose real compliance with the identifier is 17 % in the country last month, according to the data collected by CBS News.

Other states close to similar compliance rates have been reported, with Pennsylvania of 26 % compliance and New York by 43 %, which is less than half of all the population living in the state.

For individuals in these states, the criteria for compliance with real identity reaches what could be a nightmare for travel, especially before the summer holiday season when airports prepare for a sharp rise in traffic.

As of January 2024, only 56 % of the state’s identity licenses and cards were compatible with the new real identity requirements, according to DHS estimates. It is not clear how much this percentage changed last year.

The agency said in a note last September: “The Ministry of National Security expects that a large number of individuals who seek to use DL/ID for official purposes are real identifiers on May 7, 2025, they may not have a compatible DL/ID.”

In January, the Ministry of National Security issued a slightly optimistic projection in the federal registry, expecting that by May 7, up to 66 % of American identity holders will have the newly required identifier.

But in the last days before the judiciary, it is difficult to make sure of the place of things. Horror stories continue in some states of drivers who are struggling to obtain the new identity, and elsewhere, the state lawmakers hope to get a delay.

In Kentucky, a group of legislators in the state, led by the Chairman of the Senate Transport Committee, Jimmy Higdon, urged R-Lebanon, Minister of National Security, Christie Naim, to delay the date of the real identity enforcement, noting “increasing concerns” from the state’s residents who were not subject to access to driving licensing services due to “the possibility of having limited appointment and long dates.”

“This simple request is the protection of the Peruvial burdens,” Higdon said in the letter. “The population of the countryside, the elderly, and the families still have obstacles in front of them, and in many cases, they may not be aware of their options. Only about 40 percent of our residents have a real identifier, but I also want to get more time to help Kentuck understand that they may not need a real identifier. Kentucky has made a good effort, but we are not only there.”

TSA warned that individuals who do not have the right identification before that date can undergo much longer waiting times or other travel disturbances. This may affect travel plans for millions of Americans before what is expected to be a crowded summer travel season.

Others can be prevented from reaching some federal buildings.

The problem continues in other states as well: CBS News found in its poll in April that at least 17 states have compliance rates by 50 % or less, with 30 states less than 70 % of compliance.
