Remembering Charlie Rangel through Pergram’s personal encounters on Capitol Hill

I did not know the number “917” in New York that called me.

But there was no doubt about who called the contacts after leaving a message.

The caller was completely unambiguous.

They did not say their name.

They were not on them.

“Chad, you are the only one who missed me,” the hustle of the sound.

The former Charlie Rangel in New York.

She carried elegance from the stone crushing over the basalt in the western Virginia quarry.

The audio post was from the late MP Charlie Rangel, DN.Y. He was mainly calling to assure me that he did not die.

After all, I was apparently the only member of the Concert Press Corps who noticed that Democrat in New York did not vote and was not anywhere near the American Capitol in several weeks.

There was no article in Roll Call. Nothing in Politico. There is no statement from his office.

Rangel only was not about.

So I called and went to talk to the Director of Communications, Hana Kim and Chief of Staff George Henry.

I asked if Rangel was fine. They assured me that it was. But they did not give me the full story. It was for Rooff.

Then, Rangel called himself-from his sick era-until I hear the distinctive sound of his mountain that communicates with Manhattan’s voice to prove this reporter that he is still among the neighborhoods.

Rangel said: “I wanted to hear it from me.”

It was in 2012. Rangel was out of a back injury and viral infection, which made it difficult for him to stand for long periods of time. From 2008 to late 2010, Renegel stumbled through the congress halls on a daily basis as a veteran Congress member wrestling with the ethics scandal. The issue of ethics in the House of Representatives culminated in the monitoring of Rangel, which permanently summarizes his record as a war champion, a founding member of the Black Gathering in Congress and head of the Roads and Means Committee.

He was first elected at home in 1970, and the Rangel star was afraid after the ethics scandal. But in 2012, it was any information about the elderly, a legendary Congress member such as Rangel worthy of publishing. Therefore, as a correspondent in Capitol Hill, I appreciate the phone call because it describes the painful pain he gets.

The investigation of the Ethics and Supervision Committee can be more painful than the Rangel more than the background problem. Rangel was so confident that he did not violate the bases of the House of Representatives to the point that he referred himself to the Ethics Committee.

Rangel began to feel the heat of morals in 2008. He failed to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes or rental revenues in a villa in the Dominican Republic.

An apartment that is controlled for rent in Harlem has multiplied as a campaigns. It was incorrectly stopped, the Mercedes -Benz Silver Vehicle in 1972 in the garage of the Rayburn House office building. The house is prevented from using the garage for storage. Benz was lacked paintings, and he was not registered and it seemed that he was not driving within four years. Vols, Virginia, removed the country company outside the garage on September 19, 2008.

A video about the drip that pulled Mercedes -Benz from Rippurne that would have made an exciting story the next morning on TV. But Rangel caught a break.

Then, Nancy Pelosi, Dr. California, called for the then Treasury Secretary Hank Bolson to Capitol Hill that night. The American economy was on the verge of epic financial collapse. Upon darkness, it was clear how bad the nation’s economy was. Everyone temporarily forgot about Rangel. In fact, it may have been in a better condition than some American car companies at that moment.

But the parliament’s Ethics Committee was investigating Rangel. The investigation began in 2009 and reached its peak in the blame in the House of Representatives Hall in 2010. The House of Representatives voted 333-79 for discipline. Rangs rested himself in the house of the house room, and the hands are folded in front of him as if he was about to receive the company. Pelosi cleared it from Dais and gently fell with the clown.

“He has violated the confidence of the public,” said Zoe Lovgrin, head of the Ethics Committee at the time.

The first blame for a member of the House of Representatives was 27 years ago.

Years later, Rangel told half an air that he could blame me for his problems on the Ethics Committee.

As mentioned earlier, it was Rangel who believed that his actions were beyond suspicions. Therefore, he sent himself before the Ethics Committee to review his behavior.

Capitol entered one morning in 2008 and discovered his assistant for a long time, Emile Milne, wandering on the basement. I asked Melmen what he was looking for. Varly gave up a jammed envelope in my face.

“The Ethics Committee,” said Millen.

This was the actual “self -reference” to the Ethics Committee. Millen was seeking the Rangel file that he used to defend himself.

I knew exactly where the Ethics Committee is located in those days in the Capitol Seedab. So Millen accompanied the door.

As I said, Rangel told that he could blame all his problems on me.

Between 2008 and 2010, Rangs took out somewhere in the Capitol almost every day. Today Pelosi summoned him to her office. Today, Pelosi removed him as roads and means of a chairman. On the day when he spoke at the floor of the house to defend himself against allegations after the Ethics Committee gave the official nature to its achievement.

One night, a group of correspondents caught Rangel in the hallway off the floor of the house and asked it with a hail of questions. Rangel answered for a short period. Then deviation. Then he decided to have enough as the scribes released questions at him quickly.

Rangel sighed, angry at what to do.

“Sergeant Charles B. Rangel. 85718162!” Holler Rangel. “And that’s all I will say about that!”

It is not clear whether other correspondents just understand what happened. But I did.

By early dawn light: The battles will face a “major and beautiful bill” Trump in the Senate

Rangel served in the army during the Korean war. He was injured in the back by shrapnel, and in the end he led dozens of men from a fiery battle and for safety. Many soldiers died, and others took a prisoner. Rangel received the purple heart star and the bronze star with Falor.

Rangel survived that day. But again on the Capitol Hill, the news cycle had already taken a prisoner. Therefore, complied with the conditions of the Geneva Convention. The prisoner of war is only forced to provide the enemy’s kidnappers with their name, rank and serial number. After absorbing heavy fire from the Press Corps, Rangel had only one option.

It is worth noting that someone has a military record and the army’s service has died on the day of the anniversary.

In August 2008, Rangel published his CV entitled “I haven’t spent a bad day since then.” The book recounts how high school leaks joined the army and was injured in the battlefield. Rangel chose to continue – in the end he ended in Congress as one of the most important legislators in the past fifty years. But Rangel then faced one of the harshest penalties from which Congress can get out. He assigned him his presidency and reputation.

But Rangel was often philosophical about his fate and transgressions in Congress. He said that despite the problem, he had not spent a bad day since that fateful battle in Cono Rey, Korea in late 1950.

In 2012, you might be the only person who noticed that Rangel was absent when he was experiencing the case of back and viral infection.
