Romania has banned the far -right candidate in the country’s presidential vote from participating in the elections, in a move denoted the name “tyranny”, which came despite the Trump administration warnings to respect the desires of the voters.
The country’s electoral office said on Sunday that it was nullifying the Călin Georgescu nomination after receiving objections that he had violated the laws against extremism.
Georgisco denounced what he said was “a direct blow to the heart of democracy all over the world.” In a message posted on X, he added: “Europe is now dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!”
The candidate now has 24 hours to file a complaint, which has a constitutional court another 48 hours to evaluate it, which means that the final decision on the ban will come on Wednesday evening at the latest.
The date of the repeated elections was set from May 4 and 18 after the Constitutional Court canceled the first round in November after allegations of Russian intervention in favor of Georgsco.
Modern opinion polls have suggested that he is the candidate, as some quote more than 40 percent of his support.
US Vice President JD Vance condemned the transfer of elections last year as evidence of the European retreat of democracy. Vans accused the Roman authorities of running “fake” intelligence and the alleged pressure from other European capitals.
Georgsco’s supporters clashed with the police in Bucharest after hearing the result.
The electoral authority, BEC, said its logic behind the decision later on Sunday that it was partially prohibiting Georgasco on the same reasons that the first elections were canceled in December.
“It is unacceptable when restarting the elections to consider that the same person fulfills the conditions necessary to join the presidency.”
Elon Musk, Donald Trump’s ally and billionaire that supports Georgsco, described the move as a “crazy” in a post on X.
The electoral office said that it had received more than 1,000 complaints against Georgasco’s attempt, most of which are linked to extremism and support for the fascist leaders in World War II in the country.
“Any prevention of Georgsco is linked to its legislation,” MEP SiegFried Murean told FT. “One should not be a victim of his demonstration novel that his ban is the result of his political success.”
The extreme right -wing candidate gave Nazi greeting after being interrogated by the prosecutors in a criminal investigation related to his association with fascist groups and attempts by leaders to undermine the constitutional system.
On Sunday’s decision is likely to increase the anger of many Romanians who have long rejected the prevailing parties that they were corrupt and ineffective.
Extreme right -wing parties have taken control of a third of the Legislative Council of Romania since separate elections in December.
George Simon, the leader of the largest group of this in Parliament, described on Sunday’s resolution as a “continuation of the coup” from the previous cancellation. He previously said that in the event of a ban on Georgsco, he will run in place.
Many other candidates have made offers to the presidency alongside Georgsco, including the mayor of Bucharest Nikuor Dan and Crink Antonsco, supported by several major parties.
