Romero rescues point for Spurs
Tottenham showed character to deny Newcastle three points.
Tottenham captain Christian Romero saved a point for Thomas Frank, who twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United.
Frank had a tough trip to St James’ Park under a lot of pressure after a humbling 2-1 home loss to Fulham, and they were on the defensive for the vast majority of the game on Tyneside.
After frustrating Newcastle for 70 minutes, Tottenham were beaten by Newcastle captain and surprise substitute Bruno Guimaraes, who curled in a stunning shot from the edge of the box to open the scoring.
Romero responded eight minutes later by beating Dan Byrne to Mohamed Quddus’s cross near the post to restore parity.
It looked as if Anthony Gordon would prove the winner for Newcastle when he scored an emphatic goal from the penalty spot after Rodrigo Bentancur was controversially adjudged to have brought down Byrne in the box, only for Romero to provide some stoppage-time magic when his overhead kick somehow went wide of Aaron Ramsdale and into the bottom right corner.
The two teams remained equal with 19 points in the English Premier League table, five points behind the top four.
Bruno finds breakthrough at Newcastle
Newcastle got off to a flying start, with Lewis Hall firing a shot wide and Nick Woltemade heading over the bar before Lewis Mayle tested Guglielmo Vicario from the edge of the box.
Joelinton then fired inside the post from a tight angle after latching on to a brilliant pass down the right channel from Jacob Murphy, although Spurs made clear their threat when Lukas Bergvall headed Kudus’ right-wing cross over the bar.
Eddie Howe brought on Guimarães for the second half in place of Sandro Tonali, and Newcastle were quickly off the mark in the second half.
Harvey Barnes was denied at the near post by Vicario, with Woltemade’s follow-up cleared off the line by Kevin Danso.
Tino Livramento blocked a powerful shot before Gordon and Guimaraes combined to score one last goal.
The Brazil international countered Gordon’s retreat from the left wing with a brilliant finish, but Newcastle’s failure to build on that lead immediately proved costly.
Tottenham come from behind twice
Vicario equalized with another Miley effort, and the Newcastle midfielder was at fault when Romero equalised, turning the ball over after recycling the ball into the box after the teenager failed to clear.
Tottenham were left furious when Thomas Bramall was sent to the pitch monitor to review Bentancur’s challenge on Byrne at a corner kick. He duly pointed out the spot after the check and sent Gordon Vicario in the wrong direction.
However, Spurs made the most of the nine minutes of stoppage time, with Romero unexpectedly scoring with a goal that was as stunning as it was bizarre to at least ease some of the pressure on Frank.
