US awaits Putin ceasefire proposal for Russia-Ukraine conflict after Trump call

Secretary Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that the United States is awaiting a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who may lead to a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“He says he is going, they will submit a proposal that would lead to a ceasefire, which will then lead to broader negotiation,” Rubio told legislators during the Senate’s sub -committee session. “I think we will know from the context of this proposal where their mentality exists and where they are standing.”

When asked whether he believes that Russia is ready to cut a deal, the Secretary and the temporary national security advisor said: “I think Putin will always lead to cutting the deal that is believed to be in the interest of the country, Russia and to look at the world.”

President Donald Trump and Putin spoke over the phone for two hours on Monday, although the discussion did not result in an immediate penetration. Trump told reporters he believed that Putin wanted peace and said he trusted him.

When asked if Ukrainian President Folodimir Zelinski does enough to convey the peace process, Trump said: “I prefer you within two weeks from now, because I cannot say yes or no.”

“See, he is a strong person, Zelenskyy, a strong man, and he is not the easiest person to deal with,” Trump said. “But I think he wants to stop, and this is a very bad thing happening there. I think he wants to stop. But I can answer this question better in two or four weeks from now. I hope the answer is that he wants to solve it.”

On Tuesday, the European Union approved a set of new sanctions against Russia, and Republicans at Capitol Hill said they were waiting for the green light from the White House to pass a new sanctions package.

Trump said on Monday that he was not yet ready to impose new sanctions, but in the future.

“I think there is an opportunity to accomplish something,” Trump said. “And if you do so, you can also make it much worse. But there may be time when it happens.”

He also said that Moscow and Kiev will continue the direct peace negotiations, adding that the Vatican was ready to host peace talks.
