​Several companies announce record-breaking 122 Tb SSDs

At the same time, large language models and other artificial intelligence models require increasing amounts of memory.

“You can see where the storage requirements are going,” says Roger Corel, chief manager of Amnesty International and driving marketing at Soldigm. “You have been looking at a big language model for only two years, you have had half a beta for each shelf or less. Now there are large linguistic models ranging from three to three and a half by each shelf. Storage efficiency to enable the continued scaling of Amnesty International’s infrastructure is really important.”

4 ways to enhance SSD capacity

“There are four types of vectors where you can innovate to increase the capacity of each SSD,” says Corel. “One of them is the bits of each cell, and then it is the number of cells that you can pack in one layer, and the number of layers that you can accumulate from these memory cells, and four are the efficiency of packaging, which eventually means the number of number that can fit with Nand in a specific shape factor.”

The number of bits for each cell is literally the number of different values ​​that can be stored in one floating flash transistor. These transistors are constantly filled on a layer. Adding more layers makes the device longer, but, as Corell says, the height is not a specific factor in data centers today, so there is room for expansion.

Soldigm was already making 4 -bit devices each cell, so it was innovated by filling more cells for each layer of 60 terabyte to 122 , especially using the smallest NAND technology and reducing the size of the ingredients other than Nand. PHison moved from Nand 3 -bit cells to 4 bits, and improved along all three vectors to move from 32 terabytes to 128 TB.

Aline Maltono, the first director of technical marketing at Veson, says that going to a greater number of bits for each cell makes writing times to some extent, but this still has a victory in many applications.

Maintaining the same clouds on energy as smaller devices is a fine budget action. “The driving developers will always have to do to find out, well, if we create it in this particular way, we may have some higher performance, but if we do so, it will take more strength to do this correctly,” Malventano says. “Therefore, there is mainly a seizure that continues for any certain capacity.”

The demand for high -capacity memory engines does not slow down. “It will never stop.” Higginbotham says: “There will always be more demand for SSDS larger.” Soldigm’s Corell expects that there will be Petabyte Ssds in the market before completing the contract.
