Shubman Gill initially included in India’s T20 World Cup squad; kicked out on last-minute orders from….
Shubman Gill was initially part of India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad, but a last-minute decision took him out of the entire T20I plans. Shubman Gill has been dropped from the Indian T20I squad after a string of poor performances since his return to the team in September after more than a year.
As reported by journalist Dainik Jagran, Gill was originally part of India’s 2026 ICC T20 World Cup squad, as he was strongly backed by the team management, but some selectors were opposed to his inclusion in the final stretch, leading to his shock omission from the side.
Shubman Gill has been shockingly left out of India’s squad for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup at the last minute.
In fact, much before the squad was officially announced, the Indian cricket team management had already prepared a clear plan for the players expected to feature in the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

This plan was shared with BCCI through an internal email during the recent T20I series against South Africa. The plan included a proper rest period and training period for the selected players to carefully manage the players’ workload while keeping everyone ready for the important matches.
They were to be given a structured break from matches, followed by personal training sessions based on individual needs. In addition, improving skills, strength and conditioning was also part of the programme, with the aim of keeping players fit and reducing the risk of injuries during the busy international calendar.
India’s smart strategy to prepare for T20 World Cup
The idea was to strike the right balance between comfort and preparation so that players can give their best when it matters most. The team management believed that this approach would help the players stay sharp not only for the T20I series against New Zealand, but also for the T20 World Cup.
As part of this programme, 14 players have been identified, including Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dubey, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar. Apart from them, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy were also part of these selected players.

However, Jasprit Bumrah has not been included, as he already follows a separate and carefully planned program for his fitness and workload, as reported by the journalist.
The role of determinants in Shubman Gill’s contempt
The inclusion of Shubman Gill in this internal plan clearly showed that he was expected to be part of the T20 World Cup squad. Unfortunately, things changed and she went against Gill during the final selection meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
Some selectors were not in favor of selecting the right-handed batsman, and he was eventually dropped from the team at the last minute, despite being part of previous plans. Not only this, Shubman Gill missed the final T20I match against South Africa due to a minor injury.
Reports suggested that the injury was not very serious, but the team management chose to avoid taking any risks with him because he was scheduled to be in the T20 World Cup squad.
