Spurs extremely keen on £61m deal for “world-class” talent
Over the past couple of years, Tottenham Hotspur have begun spending money in the transfer market to help them in their quest for success in the Premier League.
In the past four years alone, the hierarchy has dropped more than £400m on new additions, but not all big-money additions have had the desired impact in north London.
Tanguy Ndombele is just one of the players who cost a huge sum, with the Frenchman costing £63m in 2019 – a deal that was then a club record.
He made just 91 appearances for the Lilywhites over a five-year spell, before leaving on a free transfer last summer to return to his homeland.
Heading into January, the board and Thomas Frank will need to keep such a deal in mind to prevent themselves from losing a significant portion of their investment.
The latest on Tottenham’s search for new additions in January
In recent weeks, Juventus defender Gleeson Bremer has been one of the latest players to be tipped for a move to Tottenham during the upcoming transfer window.
Frank’s men are reported to be willing to pay £35m for the Brazilian centre-back, with the board aiming to add key depth and quality to the backline.
The Lilywhites have scored 11 goals in their last three competitive matches, which could make the 28-year-old a viable option in the next window.
However, the attacking department could also undergo improvement, with Monaco star Magennis Akleuch once again appearing on their radar after previously wanting to sign the striker in the summer.
According to Sasha Tavoleri, the Lilywhites are very keen to strike a deal for the 23-year-old this winter, but a deal could cost the hierarchy a pretty penny.
The journalist stated that the Ligue 1 side are currently demanding a fee of €70m (£61m) for his signature, a deal that would be one of the most expensive in their history.
Why Tottenham’s £61m target will be Simmons 2.0
Spending big on a young striker has not been unusual for Tottenham in the last couple of months, with the board spending £52m on signing Xavi Simons last summer.
The Dutchman’s move has sparked huge excitement, with the 22-year-old named as the player to fill the void in the No. 10 spot following an injury to James Maddison.
However, two months into his huge move, the youngster has struggled to make progress, as evidenced by his tally of no goals and just two assists so far.
Frank has also clearly been frustrated with the Dutchman’s lack of quality, with the manager leaving him on the bench in each of the last two matches.
A little leeway must be given to Simons, especially with the attacking midfielder often having to operate in a somewhat unnatural left-winger role in many of his starts.
However, the club could be on the verge of landing another version of the big-money talent next January, especially if they can complete a deal for Akliush in the near future.
He has been rated as a similar player to Simons in the Champions League by FBref, with the pair facing off against each other in the clash between the two sides in October.
When comparing the duo’s stats in a season like this, the Frenchman has dominated the current Tottenham star, which could give Frank the attacking talent he has been craving in recent months.
Dubbed “world class” by one analyst, Akliush has the highest combined goals and assists in the Champions League at the moment.

He has also completed more attempted passes, with more of his efforts going into the final third – showcasing his creative nature when in possession.
The above stats will undoubtedly give Frank the big-money talent he has been craving since taking the reins in north London during the off-season.
The Monaco star has also completed more passes per 90 in Europe this season, while notching more passes into the final third per 90 – reaffirming his incredible ability with the ball at his feet.
£61m on today’s market for a player of Accleuch’s quality would be an excellent bargain, with the 23-year-old having bags of time to reach the next level in his development.
As for Simons, a potential move for the Frenchman could push him further down the pecking order, but it could also provide him…
