Strava acquires massively popular Runna app

Go to any Run club in the world, and there is a good opportunity for everyone to have two things: the Garmin Smartwatch watch to track it and the Strava account to be proud of it. Looking at the global running mutation, it makes the lack of Strava in any modern training plans within the application tight and mixed. Or, at least, it was until today as Stroter Ronna acquired.

For those who no Torting themselves through the daily tour at 6 am, this is great news – even if the companies keep my mother the financial details of the deal. Strava is the most famous social media application in the market. Meanwhile, Runna exploded to the scene in 2021 and quickly climbed the application charts for people who need 5K, 10K training plans. Since its launch, an additional $ 6.3 million of funding has been secured for his training in which artificial intelligence has been working, as users have spanned 180 countries. In 2024, Runna also doubled three times in the size of its team and currently employ approximately 50 houses to expand the product and technology. See the operation of Subreddits or Runtok, and you will always see someone who asks or recommends the application.

The deal appears to be like winning in Strava and Runna. Strava gets one of the largest weaknesses – lack of training training plans. For Runna, it can reach one of the largest online running and Strava cabinets.

“For a while, Strava has created fixed -based documents for hostile documents, but the reality is those that have been very frequently used,” says Michael Martin, CEO of Strava. According to the company’s search, the lack of guidelines for users and newcomers for a long time for the application was for a long time. “We realized that, as linked to hostility, this guidance was training plans.”

There will be a short waiting before Strava and Runna users see changes from the acquisition.

“Effective, nothing changes for the user outside the gate. Our plan with this acquisition is to invest more in the development of the Runna application, investing in the Runna team, then continuing to run it as an independent way but in an integrated way,” Martin says.

“Ambition is to do things where it is logical,” adds Runna and CEO DOM Maskell, who notes that the most smooth integration between the two applications will help create a smoother user experience. “It looks like this, and the user comes and they want to see what they are doing today. This is sitting in our Ronna, then they want to go to a path for this running – sitting in Strava. Then, if they want direct training, this is on our Ronna, then Stefra is frankly transferred to us to register on your phone.

“… I really think this is great for all users. I am pleased to tell everyone that and sit on Reddit all day to answer everyone’s questions.”

One thing has not yet been determined is how the subscriptions will work. Strava has a free layer, but it receives $ 79.99 annually for distinct features, while Runna costs $ 119.99 annually. While Runna is currently using a third -party Strava application programming interface, until the details are eliminated, users will still need to subscribe to both servants to get a full set of features. When clicking on this case, Martin says he imagines that the Runna acquisition is closer to the time the company has bought Recover Athletics, an application to prevent injuries, more than it gets FATMAP, a 3D mapping platform. With the Strava subscription, Recover Athletics is basically a free feature but works as a separate application. However, the FATMAP application was retired in late 2024 and technology/features were combined in Strava.

Subscriptions will be a thorny problem for both Strava and Runna users. Over the past few years, R/Strava Subreddit has been widespread on charges of discrimination, as many direct their anger towards the features of Paywalling App. In general, users tend to respond badly with any changes in subscriptions or small brands that are adhered to by the larger brands. An example of this, in 2023, Strava raised subscription prices in a chaotic driver who left users angry and educated. You only need to look at the reaction to the Garmin launch of the last subscription to see that Strava-Runna’s news may not excel well with some users-the fact that Martin and Maskell are well aware.

“We have a completely active Reddit community, and I know that there is a great overlap between them and the strong voices in the comments section,” says Maskell. “We are trying to be very transparent and open with them, and I really think this is great for all users. I am pleased to tell everyone that and sit on Reddit all day to answer everyone’s questions.”

“I will lie so that I do not say that it is difficult to think about investing in growth during a period of such, but it is clear that the right thing to do,” Martin says, in an unconfirmed economic climate, in reference to the current economic climate. “This is a largely large investment growth and play. This is not a efficient play.”
