Ted Cruz wants consequences, not prosecution for Charlie Kirk murder celebrants

senator Ted Cruz, R-TEXAS, said on Tuesday that a person cannot be tried due to speech, but he supports other consequences for those who celebrate the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kerk, and puts the Senator at odds with the Trump administration.

Cruz made comments at the Politico’s Ai & Tech summit on Tuesday, when he confirmed that hate speech was protected under the first amendment to the United States Constitution.

“The first amendment protects the speech,” Cruz said.

“It completely protects the hate speech.” “It protects the malicious speech. It protects the terrible speech. What does that mean? This means that the speech cannot be tried, even if it is evil, fanatic and misinformation.”

Instead of facing the prosecution, Cruz said that anyone who celebrates the killing of Kirk, or suggested that he deserves death for his political views, should meet other forms of consequences, such as termination or expulsion. Many people have been expelled in different jobs throughout the country for comments made in response to Kirk’s death.

“We have seen, as I have noticed, throughout the country, people on the left – not everyone – but many people celebrate the killing of Charlie Kerk,” said Cruz. “We have seen high school teachers and primary schools publishing the celebration of the Internet. We have seen university professors publishing.”

“In my view, they should face the consequences of celebrating killing,” he added.

Cruz’s comments come after Prosecutor Bam Bondi said on Monday that the Ministry of Justice would target the people who participated in the hate speech after the assassination of Kirk.

Bondi later tried to retract her comments, saying that hate speech “crosses the line to the threats of violence is not protected by the first modification.”

Kirk, who was shot and killed during an event on the campus of the Utah Valley last week, was opposed to the trial of hate speech.

“The hate speech does not exist legally in America,” wrote on X last year. “There is an ugly speech. There is a grave speech. There is a evil speech. All this is protected by the first amendment. Keep America.”

In his remarks on Tuesday, Cruz prompted more “name and shame”, citing the English philosopher John Stewart Mail, who argued that the best response to speech was more talk.
