The Download: three-person babies, and tracking “AI readiness” in the US

Researchers announce children born from the experience of three people from artificial insemination
Eight children were born in the UK thanks to a technique that uses DNA of three people: Biological parents in addition to a third person provides DNA for mitochondria. Children were born to mothers who carry genes for mitochondria diseases and risk passing severe disorders.
In the team’s approach, patients are fertilized with sperm, and the nuclei of those cells containing these cells is transferred to fertilized eggs that have been removed their own nuclei. The new embryos contain the DNA of the intended fathers along with a small part of the dNA of the mitochondria of the donor, floating in the cytoplasm embryos.
The study, which uses a technique called donor donation, was described as a “tour of strength” and “great achievement” by others in this field. But not everyone sees that the trial is a resounding success. Read the full story.

In defense of air conditioning
Crownhartcy
I will admit that I rarely frequently made a finger accused of air conditioning. In many stories and newsletters, I have identified that AC is a major contributor to global demand for electricity, and will only absorb more energy with high temperatures.
But I will also be the first to admit that it can be a technique of saving life, which may become more necessary with the intensification of climate change. In the wake of the last deadly heat wave in Europe, it was strangely modified. Read our story to learn more.

An artificial open intelligence boom is designed on Big Tech boxes. How long will it continue?
In May 2023, she said a leaked note written by Luke Sernu, a great Google engineer, loudly, many should be in Silicon Valley whispering weeks ago: The Big Tech comes up to AI.
In many ways, this is a good thing. Artificial intelligence will not flourish if a few trust companies reach this technology or decide how to use it. But this open source prosperity is unstable, and if the Big Tech decides to silence the store, Boomtown may become a back water. Read the full story.
