Texas lawmakers consider bill prohibiting the use of SNAP to buy junk food

A draft law that makes its way through the Legislative Commission in Texas will prevent people from using the benefits of supplementary nutritional assistance program (SNAP) on unwanted foods, including soda drinks, drinks, sweets, potatoes and cookies.

The Senate Bill 379 will narrow the restrictions imposed on the types of foods that people can purchase using Snap boxes, previously known as Food Stamps.

Republican senator Mays Mez Midlton, who composed the draft law, said that he submitted the legislation to return to Snap’s original intention to focus on the food food necessary for health and luxury. Similar bills were provided by the support of the two parties at the Texas HB 3188, proposed by Democratic Representative Richard Raymond and HB 4970, presented by Republican Republican Presso Caen.
