The 5 Stranger Things Season 5 Questions Netflix Wants You To Ask After Watching

Written by Chris Snellgrove | Published

Netflix has made a bold decision to split Strange thingsSeason five is divided into three parts, with the first four episodes dropping earlier this week. It didn’t take long for fans to digest these episodes like a box of delicious egg tarts, everyone counting down until the next three episodes drop on Christmas. Until that happens, the fanbase will still have some seriously pressing questions.

What questions are we talking about? Grab your bike and grab some tissues to cure any nosebleeds as we dive into the biggest questions we still have (beware of spoilers, everyone) after the film’s premiere Strange thingsSeason 5!

1. What is the army actually up to?

In the fifth season of Strange thingsthe military has quarantined the town of Hawkins and is conducting strange experiments on the Upside Down. These experiments are led by Dr. Kay, a creepy scientist played by newcomer Linda Hamilton. She has a laboratory within the Upside Down, and has learned enough to partially control some of its creatures, such as when she uses the tentacles of a terrifying creature to strangle the unlucky Hopper.

However, we don’t know what the point of trying it is. Is she (in the fine tradition of films like Aliens) trying to find a way to weaponize Upside Down on behalf of the government? It’s also not clear what she does with Eight’s “sister”, Eleven’s similarly powerful “sister”. In this regard, since Eight can display mental illusions, we’re not entirely sure how much of what happened with Eleven and Hopper in the lab is real and not some sort of psychic projection.

As for Linda Hamilton, we’re confident (in the words of one of her most famous stars) that she’ll “come back,” and we’ll get some of those questions answered in the next few episodes.

2. What’s up with this flesh wall?

One of the most surprising things about… Strange things Season 5 is a physical wall that looks like it was taken straight out of a David Cronenberg film. This organic wall surrounds the Upside Down and Dr. Kay’s creepy laboratory. Speaking of the crazy doctor, we see her experimenting on the wall, where she obtains the creature she uses to attack Hopper.

But is this the wall where Vecna keeps those children he kidnapped? Is it the same wall we saw Will pinned to in the first episode’s flashback sequence? Does this huge wall have anything to do with the fact that Vecna is a mass of muscle when he shows up to kill one poor soldier after another?

So far, we have more questions than answers about the wall. The answers to these questions are sure to be the key to solving some of the show’s craziest mysteries.

3. Is the maximum in dimension X?

Season 5 of Strange things He reveals that Max’s body is still in a coma but Eleven has succeeded in sending her mind elsewhere. She shows up to help young Holly Wheeler, herself one of the children kidnapped by Vecna for unknown reasons. While their interactions are fun and the show is clearly setting up Max to play a big role in defeating Vecna, we’re faced with a more fundamental question: Where exactly is she?

It appears to be in Vecna’s memories, and Vecna himself was originally sent to Dimension X, where he got his strange powers in the first place. So, is Max in Dimension X, or the villain’s mind, or maybe both? The answers to this question will likely have to do with whether or not she will wake up “normal” in the real world or if she will be forever changed by the psychological scars left by her experiences.

4. What’s the deal with Will’s new powers?

The most crowd-pleasing moment Strange thingsSeason 5 (so far, at least) has been the reveal of Will’s Eleven-style psychic powers. At the end of Episode 4, all hope seems lost: most of the children have been kidnapped by Vecna, and the Demogorgons are about to devour our main characters. Suddenly, though, Will’s eyes went white, and he channeled some newfound mental magic to kill these creatures, twisting their limbs in a way that would make Vecna proud.

It’s a really great moment, but it raises some major questions. Does Will now have the same power set as Eleven (he even rocked her signature nosebleed), and if so, has Vecna granted him those powers? So why would Vecna make his first victim so powerful unless he planned to later use Will as a weapon? Or are Will’s powers limited to the Demogorgons and other Vecna minions due to the strange psychic connection they share?

If Vecna is intentionally giving young Will such amazing powers, it could indicate that he wants to do the same to all the children he kidnaps. This could mean he’s gathering an army against the biggest, most unexpected baddie of all: the Mind Flayer.

5. Vecna or The Mind Flayer: Who’s the boss?

Strange things It’s had several villain-related adaptations: After the first season made the Demogorgon a stand-alone bad guy, we were later introduced to the Mind Flayer as the show’s true Big Bad. Or is he? Season 4 introduced the idea that Vecna was ultimately the Big Bad, someone who was manipulating the Mind Flayer for his own nefarious purposes.

However, the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow He introduced the idea that Vecna (when he was just Henry) first encountered the powers of the Mind Flayer in a cave in Nevada. From there, Flair gave the young man powers which he used to kill his family, eventually becoming Carrie’s character whose blood he uses to give Eleven and others their amazing powers. In Season 5, we see Max hanging out in Vecna’s memories (or perhaps Dimension X), and she occasionally hides in a cave that Vecna is afraid to enter.

The area looks like Nevada, which would make this the same cave where Henry was exposed to the Mind Flayer’s powers, beginning the journey that would turn him into Vecna. This has led some fans to believe that if Vecna is still afraid of the Upside Down’s resident monster, then the Flayer may actually be responsible. This could relate to the reason Vecna kidnapped children: if he shared his blood with them while twisting their minds, he might have an army that could finally destroy the Mind Flayer, freeing it from its clutches once and for all.
