The HDMI 2.2 specification supports 16K video at 60Hz

After announcing it for the first time in CES 2025, the HDMI Forum will finally issue the new HDMI 2.2 specifications for the manufacturers today. Although there is no final timetable for the duration that the hardware makers will take to adopt the new specifications, the first HDMI Ultra96 cables, while enhancing the possibilities of displaying domain of up to 96 GB, can be available later this year.
HDMI 2.1 and HDMI HDMI HDMI cables. The width of the 48GB domain per second supports decisions of up to 10K and updates rates of up to 120 Hz with 4K content. HDMI 2.2 and new Ultra96 cables will be higher resolution and update rate including 4K in 480Hz, 8K in 240Hz, 10K in 120Hz, and even 16K in 60 Hz. It will also deal with non -compressed video formats in 10 bits and 12 -bit at 8K at 60 Hz and 4 kg in 240 Hz.
Looking at how difficult it is to find the original 8K content, do not expect cable service providers or console makers 16,000 any time soon. HDMI 2.1 has been present since 2017 and devices still do not fully benefit from the specifications, and therefore the increase in the frequency range and decisions 2.2 should help raising HDMI specifications for years to come.
The HDMI Forum also hopes to facilitate the new specifications for consumers to know the cable they need. HDMI cables are currently distinguished by names including standard speed, high speed, high -speed speed and very high speed, which do not provide any details about their capabilities. With HDMI 2.2, the Ultra96 name will show that the cable supports the new specifications and the reinforcement width of up to 96 GB per second.
HDMI 2.2 will also include the new LIP cumin index, which was also announced last January. This feature is designed to build on audio and video synchronization improvements with HDMI 2.1, especially for the settings in which signals are backed through a sound bar or a FIV reception device before reaching a TV or display.
All cables that support HDMI 2.2 specifications will be adopted and features a Ultra96 brand by the test centers approved at the HDMI forum to ensure their ability to deal with the increasing frequency range. However, the accredited device of Ultra96 will not necessarily require a new HDMI cable if you do not need the latest features. You can continue to use your older HDMI cables, and still benefit from some HDMI 2.2 features that do not require the top -frequency range. But if you want to upgrade home theater to 16 thousand, you will need to upgrade to Ultra96 cables.
Update, June 26: Add details about the Ultra96 certificate and correspond to the old HDMI cables.
