The Vin Diesel ‘Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots’ Movie Has a New Writer: Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel is attached to star and produce A.J Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots film for years, and now, he’s hired a new writer: himself. Nearly five years after news of an adaptation of the classic game was first revealed, he has become the star of the film Riddick and Fast and furious The franchise has now also been announced as the newest screenwriter.

“I’m excited to expand the Mattel universe by bringing this classic toy from my childhood to a modern audience by telling a story that examines the role of competition in a world often measured by power and dominance that dares to reveal the power of compassion at its core,” Diesel said in a statement to Deadline, which broke the news. Mattel then confirmed this on its website.

“Finn is a powerful storyteller with an unparalleled understanding of action, heart, and worldbuilding,” added Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Studios and a producer on the film. “His creative vision Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots It’s bold, human and very cinematic, exactly the kind of storytelling we love at Mattel Studios.

“Bold, humane, and deeply cinematic.” Let’s sit with that for a second. We don’t doubt that a movie about fighting robots could be those things. After all, real steel, Starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy already exists. But using those words to describe a movie based on two toys fighting and nothing else seems too ambitious. Is the story of Red Rocker and the Blue Bomber really capable of that? And from Diesel’s own script, no less?

Anything is possible, of course. Who would have thought Barbieanother Mattel film, could it have been as great and successful as it was? But this feels somewhat different, mostly because this movie was announced in 2021 with another writer, and now, after all this time, that scenario seems to have been ruled out. That writer was Ryan Engel, who wrote Without stopping and commotionIts story was about “a father and son who form an unexpected bond with an advanced war machine.” Which sounds…like exactly Real steel.

We don’t know what Diesel’s story is, or when he might start production on the film. He has a lot on his plate. But we’ll be waiting with bated breath to see if it delivers a “daring, human and deeply cinematic” experience.
