Manchester United have held positive talks with Harry Maguire over a new contract.

Maguire, whose current contract with Manchester United expires at the end of the summer, was involved in contract talks at Old Trafford.

There is huge interest in Maguire, especially from the Saudis who are willing to offer him financially lucrative deals.

However, Maguire appears prepared to reject those proposals in favor of a new deal.

Interestingly, if he signs a new contract extension, it would mean that the player has agreed to a significant salary cut.

Romano confirms the positive meeting between Manchester United and Harry Maguire

This is according to Fabrizio Romano who shared the latest update on Harry Maguire’s contract situation.

According to the Italian transfer expert, there have been positive talks between the club and the player regarding a new deal.

The club wants to keep Maguire due to his importance on and off the pitch. He remains an important player for the club. The player is also happy to continue at Old Trafford.

Both sides now need to reach a financial agreement with Maguire required to agree to a significant pay cut in order to stay on.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Here We Go podcast, Romano said:

“Harry Maguire is another interesting case because there was a meeting in recent days between Maguire’s agent who was at Carrington for the Manchester United meeting. Harry will be more than happy to stay at the club, and he is more than happy to keep a player who is performing very well on the pitch and also in terms of leadership in the dressing room.”

“So there is a positive exchange between Maguire and United but in order to extend this contract, they have to discuss different terms. So if United and Maguire are going to reach an agreement on a new deal, it is because Harry will reduce his current salary. So the financials of Maguire’s contract will be very important to understand if he continues at the club or if they decide to part ways and try something different.

Maguire was on the verge of leaving under Erik ten Hag but the arrival of Ruben Amorim changed his fate.

He has found his form and has become a key player for Amorim in terms of his influence on and off the pitch.

Amorim has previously praised his leadership as “perfect” for his playing style.

Speaking to the media after the Manchester derby last season, the Manchester United coach said:

“Maguire is perfect when you play with three defenders. He is perfect in the middle. All the players defended very well, not just Harry. They were very focused.”
