Threads launches its own DM inbox, as app moves further away from Instagram

Instagram interconnected indicators offer the feature of the most requested users so far: the ability to send messages directly to people, without having to switch to another application, such as Instagram. The company said that direct messages (DMS) will start offering users worldwide on Tuesday, along with a new visual element called highlight.

Meta says that the latter will confirm interesting views and talks, starting with topics that are heading.

At launch, Threads DMS offers a basic set of features. They will support individual chats, pre -empty codes, and the ability to report random mail, and Mute DMS (as in Instagram). Other features, such as collective correspondence, incoming mail filters, and the most advanced messages, will reach a later version.

This means today, you cannot prevent followers or subscribers from your messages for you – you can just block them on themes, which you will also prohibit on Instagram. To control who can send a message to you, you should choose whether to follow the user or not.

At launch, DMS will be available in most markets where topics are available, except for Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

With the addition of DMS, themes become more competitive with other social applications for the first text such as X and Bluesky, where users can deal with each other directly or even in group chats, as in the case of X.

However, while X works on directly encrypted messages within X Chat, there are no topics that there is no intention to secure their correspondence feature tightly.

“We do not cushion DMS,” said Emily Dalton Smith, Vice president of the product. “It is only about communicating directly and talking to people about everything that is happening now, which I think it makes encryption less essential to the experience.”

Instead, she said that DMS aims to build on the society that people created in the public space on topics – a network that is formed completely different from its mother application, on Instagram, Smith pointed out that.

She said: “One of the things that was particularly exciting is that we have seen that people build their graphs on topics.” “They build what we think as a new and distinct graph from the social chart on which their Instagram account is based.”

Although it was built at the head of the social chart in Instagram, more than a third of the people who come to themes daily interfere with less than 50 % between Instagram connections and thread connections.

Smith pointed out that “Instagram is really for creativity and threads for perspectives.”

The company also found that users are following different groups of people via Instagram and Threads and participating in different interests and conversations.

Because of this growing separation between applications, Meta aims to test other ways for people to use topics without an Instagram account.

For example, users’ ability to log in using their Facebook account is tested in Europe or create an interconnected indicators account only. It also tests the ability to use web bonding indicators with no login at all.

The Creator Society of Topics is also unique. Although it may include those who are famous creators on other platforms, some have become creative on the subjects themselves. Examples include David Rashing, one of the emotional fans who built the American Professional League threads.

Smith said that the topics would like to facilitate its users to find societies like this and others, and this is an important part of the upcoming road map in the application.

On this front, interconnected indicators initially provided signs (such as retail signs without retail code) to organize conversations. Then she created the topic extracts so that you can see everything discussed about this important field. Now the focus will be on identifying people who are active and the most important shareholders within society.

Smith said that the topics expect to show more proposed users to follow the research and recommendations during the next two months.

The new highlight feature can also help here.

Although the feature will highlight the ongoing topics related to the content you read during your scrolling for you, over time, signs can light on views of users or active conversations that you may want to jump to, including within different subjects of topics.

Smith emphasized that there are currently no other plans to achieve income from the threads that exceed ads, although Meta has the feature of Amnesty International that can be combined into the experiment in the way in which Chatbot is used from Xai, Grok, to sell X Premium subscriptions.

Instead, Meta first focuses on correcting ads, with AI’s use to run things in the background, such as Trending Thinks addresses and summaries, for example.

This does not mean that the team will exclude the features of artificial intelligence on the road.

Smith said: “We probably consider all ideas, but we are in fact only based on what our society tells us and we are trying to give priority to such a small and growing application.”

Topics are not small, to be clear; The app contains 350 million active users per month, much more than new arrivals such as Bluesky, which includes 37 million registered users. But compared to the Meta family of applications, where the user’s bases are calculated in billions, the topics still have a lot to prove to her father.

Before global launch, DMS was tested earlier this month in a few markets, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Argentina and Brazil.
