Tony bellew shares his verdict on Moses Itauma vs Tyson Fury: “You can’t pick him”
Moses Itauma continues to impress, so much so that the debate now centers on how he will perform against the best in the world. Tony Bellew recently contemplated an all-British showdown against “The Gypsy King” Tyson Fury.
Itauma has won 11 of his 13 bouts by stoppage, most recently finishing former world title challenger Dillian Whyte within two minutes. His combination of speed, raw power and composure from a southpaw stance could pose problems for any heavyweight on the planet, many of whom are already on the verge of becoming a dominant champion.
To do that, Itauma may have to force a changing of the guard against some of the big names that have been competing in the division over the past decade. One of them, if he decides to come out of retirement, is two-time champion Fury.
Speaking to Pundit Arena, Bellew was adamant that Itauma will not stop the bigger, more experienced man.
“Nobody’s going to knock Tyson Fury out. I don’t think Tyson would enjoy it. I don’t see any point in making a prediction. Nobody’s ever going to knock him out. He’s very long in the tooth. He’s very smart. He’s intelligent. He has a lot of different attributes to use to negate what you do well.”
“Just look at the size of Tyson Fury compared to Moses Itauma. I know people will say Itauma’s size is similar to Oleksandr Usyk. But you’re talking about one of the greatest boxers of this generation. You can’t compare Moses Itauma to Oleksandr Usyk.”
Bellew then seemed to support Fury, not because he was certain he would win, but because of the questions about Itauma that could only be answered with experience.
“Moses has to get past six rounds. No one can pick Moses against top-level heavyweights if he doesn’t get past six rounds. I don’t doubt how good he is. I think he’s absolutely exceptional. But you never know how good he is until he gets past six rounds.
“He might win by a country mile, but it’s uncharted territory. It’s uncharted territory that he walks on when he gets past six rounds, and it’s nice to say you did it in the gym. I tell fighters all the time that the gym is not the ring on fight night. The pressure, the lights, the cameras, the will and desire to win.”
Itauma is looking to return to the ring in early 2026, although finding a suitable and willing opponent will be difficult. As for Fury, fans still want him back to face Anthony Joshua.
