Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur ruled out for three months
Tottenham have suffered a major setback in their already turbulent season, with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur ruled out for three months after it was confirmed he would need surgery.
The Uruguayan, who has endured a difficult year due to recurring injuries, is expected to return before the end of the season, but his absence is forcing Tottenham to take emergency measures in the January transfer market, according to Fabrizio Romano.
This news comes at a time when Thomas Frank’s side are already struggling for consistency. Tottenham have endured a disappointing season in the Premier League, plagued by poor form, a loss of identity on the pitch, and a growing list of injury problems.
Adding to their frustration is that they have recently crashed out of the FA Cup, increasing the pressure on Frank to turn things around quickly.
Tottenham lack depth in midfield
With Bentancur out, Tottenham’s midfield depth is extremely thin. The club was already dealing with long-term injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, two of the team’s most creative and influential players.
Madison’s absence left a void in creativity and connection in play, while Kulusevski’s injury removed an important outlet in transitions and wide spaces.
Now, with Bentancur not available until April, the situation has escalated into a full-blown casting crisis.
As a result, Tottenham have no choice but to intensify their search for midfield reinforcements in January.
The club has just over two weeks in the window to secure a signing capable of stabilizing the midfield, providing a defensive structure, and providing creativity.
Tottenham’s recruitment team are expected to explore permanent signings and short-term loans, with multiple profiles under consideration.
Tottenham will miss a reliable midfielder

Bentancur’s absence is particularly detrimental given his importance to the balance of Spurs’ midfield.
The midfielder participated in 28 matches with Tottenham this season, but now he will be out of action for a long time.
Without him, Tottenham often lacked control over matches and struggled to control the ball or control the tempo of play.
Spurs’ ability to find the right midfielder at the right time may ultimately determine how salvageable the rest of the season is.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Tottenham star threatened to leave the club during his playing time
