Trump adds 10% tariff on Canada over Reagan ad dispute: ‘Hostile act’

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the United States will impose additional 10% tariffs on Canadian imports, citing a “fraudulent ad” in which former President Ronald Reagan appears speaking out against tariffs.

Trump claimed the ad, which aired during the world championships that began Friday, was part of Canada’s “hope that the United States Supreme Court will come to their rescue on the tariffs they have used for years to hurt the United States.”

“Canada was caught red-handed placing a fraudulent ad on Ronald Reagan’s tariff speech,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday. The Reagan Foundation said it “created an advertising campaign using selective audio and video clips of President Ronald Reagan.” The ad misrepresents the presidential radio address, and did not request or obtain permission to use and edit the comments.”

Trump accused Canada of misrepresenting Reagan, claiming that the late president “liked tariffs” when it came to national security and the economy.

“Their ad was going to be taken down immediately, but they allowed it to run last night during the World Series, knowing it was a scam,” Trump said.

He added: “Because of their dangerous distortion of facts and aggressive action, I am increasing tariffs on Canada by 10% above what they are paying now. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is exploring legal options in response to the incident, according to Trump.

This announcement comes a few days after the President announced that he was ending trade negotiations with Canada due to the announcement.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation just announced that Canada fraudulently used a fake ad, showing Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday.

Earlier this month, Trump defended his use of tariffs as a correction for what he called years of trade imbalance, saying the United States was the “king of the tariffs” but would no longer allow other countries to take advantage of them.

“We are king of being affected by tariffs,” Trump said during a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in the Oval Office.
