Trump aims to tackle soaring Medicare prescription drug prices in new executive order

President Donald Trump is seeking to combat the high prices of medicines in a new executive order signed on Tuesday.

The matter guides the Ministry of Health and Humanitarian Services to Robert F. Kennedy Junior (DHS) to unify the medical care payments for prescribed medicines – including those used for cancer patients – regardless of where the patient receives treatment. This can reduce prices for patients by up to 60 %, according to the White House Facts newspaper.

Likewise, it also calls for the medical care payments to some of the prescribed price drugs that hospitals pay for these drugs – less than 35 % than the government pays to obtain these medications, the White House said.

It also takes steps to reduce insulin prices. The matter said: “The guidance must be improved from the transparency of the Medicare Prices for Medicines, and the priority for selecting prescribed drugs with high costs for the Medicare program, and reducing any negative effects of the maximum fair price on pharmaceutical innovation within the United States.”

Medicines prices have increased dramatically in recent years. Between January 2022 and January 2023, the prices of the prescribed medicines increased by more than 15 % and reached 590 dollars per drug product, according to the Ministry of Health and Humanitarian Services. Of the 4,200 prescription drugs listed on that list, 46 % of the price increases exceeded the inflation rate.
