NASA could do away with Washington, D.C., headquarters

NASA is considering getting rid of Washington, DC, the headquarters as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal government, according to a report.

This step can affect up to 2,500 jobs in the space agency and redistribute operations to NASA’s ten field centers, Politico said on Friday, noting two sources familiar with this issue.

“The lease of construction of the NASA headquarters has increased in 2028, and the agency is looking into options to rent a different facility in the Washington, DC,” a NASA spokesman told Fox News Digital in a statement. “NASA has no plans to build a new headquarters. According to the executive executive, NASA, including NASA headquarters, has returned to full -time on the site by February 28.”

It also comes after the administration recently allowed about 20 people from its headquarters, including the chief scientist, according to the New York Times.

Members of congress suggested earlier this year to transfer NASA to Florida, where the Kennedy Space Center, or to Cleveland, is the home of the Glenn Research Center.

“This is illogical for Doge,” said Florida Governor Ron Desantis. “Currently, the Federal Reserve is planning to build a new and costly headquarters in the capital to NASA – although few NASA employees have come to the current DC office over the past four years!”

“To improve our workforce, and in compliance with executive order, NASA has started its gradual approach to reducing power, known as RIF,” NASA, a NASA spokeswoman, said in an email, according to the New York Times. “A small number of individuals received a notice on Monday that they are part of RIF in NASA.”

NASA’s daily work in NASA occurs in its ten centers in eight states, but its headquarters in Washington connects it more to Congress and the federal government, according to Politico.

In addition to reducing its influence within Washington, the lack of DC headquarters would make coordination with international partners on matters like the International Space Station more difficult.

The ten field centers in NASA include the AMES Research Center, the Armstrong Flight Research Center, the California Flying Laboratory, the Glenn Research Center in Ohio, the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, the Johnson Space Center in Texas, the Kennedy Center for Space In Mississippi.
