Trump calls Supreme Court tariff case ‘life or death’ for US trade

“The case that the United States Supreme Court will hear tomorrow is, quite literally, life or death for our country,” Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social website. He said that if the nation’s highest court ruled in his favor, it would reaffirm his administration’s authority to use tariffs as a tool of economic and national defense.

Trump warned that if the judges ruled against him, the United States would be “virtually defenseless from other countries.”

He also touted what he called a booming American economy, where the stock market is “consistently hitting record highs” and the nation is “more respected than ever.” Trump attributed this success to his administration’s tariff policies and trade negotiations, which he said strengthened American economic security.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on whether the president has authority under the law International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) Imposing customs duties – and whether these measures violate the separation of powers provided for by the Constitution.

Trump had previously said he was considering attending the oral arguments, but on Sunday evening he said he “didn’t want to do anything to distract from” the Supreme Court case, which could shape the future of his trade agenda. The two cases were consolidated, Learning Resources Inc. v. Trump and Trump v. V.OS Selections Inc., to argue before the Supreme Court. Learning Resources is a manufacturer of educational toys and VOS Selections is a family-owned wine and spirits importer and distributor.

The dispute comes as tariffs continue to generate significant revenue for the federal government.

Meanwhile, toll revenues totaled $215.2 billion in the fiscal year, according to a report Ministry of TreasuryThe “Customs and Certain Excise Taxes” report was released on September 30.

Since Trump announced his tariffs on Emancipation Day, revenues have risen from $23.9 billion in May, to $28 billion in June and $29 billion in July.
