‘Trump has no head for details’: Kanwal Sibal decodes ongoing confusion over POTUS’ meet with Putin
Former Indian Foreign Minister Kanwal Sibal took to social media to sort out the ongoing confusion surrounding US president Donald Trump’s meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Sibal said in a post on X that Trump has no interest in geopolitical details, especially the very complex US-Russian relations.
Sibal, who also served as India’s ambassador to Russia, said Trump is being pulled in different directions by anti-Russian lobby groups within the US and the Europeans.
“The hardening of the Russian position. From what we can see, it seems that Trump does not care about the details, and Witkopf, a businessman, has a controversial grounding in geopolitics, especially the very complex one involving the United States and Russia. Hence the confusion. Moreover, Trump is being pulled in different directions by internal anti-Russian and anti-European lobbies, but the Russian side has more coherent thinking and approach.”
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that Moscow is not interested in holding a meeting unless it produces important results.
Lavrov said: “We have no interest in empty symbolism. The meeting between the two presidents must produce real, tangible results. We are ready for that. When Putin and Trump met in Anchorage, we supported the proposals presented by US envoy Steven Witkopf in Moscow a week ago.”
The Kremlin stresses that both sides need careful preparation for such high-level talks, especially amid ongoing diplomatic challenges. Moreover, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that two presidents cannot meet just for the sake of it.
“Presidents cannot gather for the sake of a meeting, they cannot just waste their time, and they are open about it. That is why they have instructed (Russian Foreign Minister Sergei) Lavrov and (US Secretary of State Marco) Rubio to prepare for this operation. The operation is complex,” Peskov was quoted as saying on state television.
Peskov also addressed recent US sanctions on Russian energy companies, calling them an “unfriendly move” that hurt prospects for improving relations.
Despite these setbacks, Peskov said Moscow still favors participation. He added: “Our interest is to build good relations with all countries, including the United States.”
He added: “The measures taken this week were an unfriendly step. They harmed the prospects for reviving our relations. But this does not mean that we must abandon these aspirations. We must do what is in our interest.”
