Trump ‘optimistic’ that the US and China can reach a deal over tariffs

White House journalist Caroline Levitte said on Friday that President Donald Trump is “optimistic” that the United States and China could face a customs tariff.

Her statements came just hours after China increased its tariffs on US imports to 125 %, an increase of 84 %, in Beijing’s last escalation of a trade war with the Trump administration.

“The president has made it clear that he was open to a deal with China,” Levit said, adding that Trump is “optimistic” to reach an agreement.

“The president will be … generous if China intends to make a deal with the United States. If China continues to take revenge, it is not good for China. The United States of America is the strongest and best economy in the world, and it is clear from more than 75 countries who have contacted management immediately to reduce good deals,” Levit said.

“Therefore, the president wants to do what is suitable for the American people. He wants to see fair trade practices around the world, and this is his intention and goal,” I continued.

When asked if Trump was waiting for China to take the first step, Levit said. “I will not comment on the contacts that occur or may not happen.”
