Trump threatens tariffs, sanctions on Mexico for robbing Texas farmers of water

president Donald Trump threatened to impose a tariff, and perhaps imposing sanctions against Mexico, if it continued to steal southern Texas farmers in Rio Grande Water and promised it under a treaty for decades.

In a publication on the social truth on Thursday, Trump announced that Mexico owed Texas 1.3 million acres of water under the water treaty in 1944, although Mexico was violating its commitment.

“This is very unfair, and it harms southern Texas farmers very badly,” the president wrote. “Last year, the only sugar mill was closed in Texas, because Mexico was stealing water from Texas farmers. Ted Cruz is leading the battle for southern Texas, and the deserving water, but Na`san Joe refused to raise his finger to help farmers. This is what ends now!”

Trump continued, saying that he will make sure that Mexico does not violate treaties with the United States and hurt farmers in Texas.

“Only last month, water shipments were stopped to Tijuana until Mexico corresponds to the 1944 water treaty,” he said. “My Minister of Agriculture, Brock Rollins, stands with Texas farmers, and we will continue to escalate the consequences, including definitions, and perhaps even sanctions, until Mexico honor the treaty, and we give Texas the water they owe!”

Texas farm groups warned of a catastrophic season against them for citrus and sugar last year, as Mexican and United States officials tried to resolve a dispute over the 1944 water treaty that provides us with critical irrigation farmers.

The two countries have faltered on the treaty before, but the lack of water driven by drought was the most severe in nearly 30 years.

Under the treaty designed to allocate joint water resources, Mexico must send 1.75 million acres of water from Rio Grande to the United States during a five -year session.

A billion dollar citrus industry in Texas depends heavily on water from Mexico, especially with more severe droughts in the region. In fact, Texas is the third largest citrus state behind California and Florida.

Last month, the Western Half Affairs Office published that it was denying a request from Mexico to provide water to Tijuana.

On the previous day, senator Ted Cruz, R-TEXAS, said that southern Texas is facing a water crisis, describing it as a “man-made crisis.”

He also indicated that he was leading the battle in the Senate to hold Mexico accountable and adhere to the treaty to provide water to farmers in southern Texas.

He participated in the position of Western Half Affairs Office, and called this step, “excellent”.

“As I said yesterday, this option is what the Trump administration absolutely needs to pressure Mexico to fulfill its obligations under the Water Treaty in 1944” Cruz wrote on X.
