Trump unveils new tariff plan against Mexico, European Union starting August 1

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that his administration will impose a 30 % tariff on goods from Mexico and members of the European Union starting from August 1, noting the trade deficit and concerns related to national security.

In separate messages published on Truth Social, Trump said the new definitions – targeting two of the largest commercial partners in the United States – were “separate from all secular definitions” that already exist.

In his message to Mexican President Claudia Shinabum Bardo, Trump said that Mexico had failed to make sufficient progress in stopping drug gangs and fentian flow from converting “North America to a NARCO Play,” which prompted him to raise his definitions from 25 % announced earlier this year.

“Mexico helped me secure the borders, but what Mexico did is not enough,” Trump wrote in his letter to Shinbom. “Mexico still did not stop the cartridges trying to convert both North America into a game that wanders in NARCO. Obviously, I can’t leave it!”

“Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose 30 % fees on Mexico on Mexican products sent to the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs,” Trump added. “The goods that were transported will be undergoing the high tariffs of this high tariff.”

In a separate message addressed to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Lin, Trump claimed that the European Union policies have caused a “major and sustainable trade deficit against the United States”, adding that the aforementioned defect also poses a major threat to national security.

“We had years to discuss our trade relationship with the European Union, and we concluded that we must stay away from this long -term, large and continuous trade deficit, which is generated by your tariff, and non -policies and commercial barriers,” Trump wrote.

Trump also warned that any retaliatory tariff imposed by Mexico or the European Union will be matched and added to the foundation price by 30 %: “Whatever the number you choose to raise, it will be added to the 30 % that we receive.”

Von Der Leyen responded to an advertisement in a post on X, warning that the customs tariff will negatively affect both economists, but expressed its willingness to continue negotiations.

Von der Layen said: “The customs tariff will be 30 % for European Union exports to hurt companies, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean,” said von der Line. “We will continue to work for an agreement by August 1. At the same time, we are ready to protect the interests of the European Union on the basis of proportional counter measures.”

The American Statistical Office data shows that Mexico is currently the trade partner in the United States in 2025. The members of the European Union, including Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands, are also among the top 15 years.

With the announcement of Saturday, Trump has now issued introductory conditions for more than twenty individual countries and the 27 -member European Union.

Xinbom did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
