United States GP: Lando Norris fastest in only practice ahead of title rivals Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen | F1 News

Lando Norris made a fast start to the United States Grand Prix weekend by setting the pace in the only practice session ahead of Sprint Qualifying later on Friday night.
A day after Norris unexpectedly revealed he faced unspecified “repercussions” from McLaren over his collision with teammate and title rival Oscar Piastri on the opening lap of the final race in Singapore, the Formula 1 title race resumed at the Circuit of the Americas with just one hour of practice over the fourth weekend of the season.
Norris finished fastest with a best lap set late in the session on the soft tires of 1:33.294.
Amidst what appeared to be a major development on the track in the final stages, Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg jumped to second place in the final moments of the race, finishing the race 0.255 seconds behind Norris.
Piastri, who leads Norris by 22 points in the drivers’ championship, was third by 0.279 seconds, while Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was fourth and the in-form Max Verstappen was fifth for Red Bull.
Singapore Grand Prix winner George Russell, who finally signed his new contract with Mercedes this week, and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton were on only medium tires and were seventh and eighth respectively.
But Charles Leclerc missed the final minutes of the session in the second Ferrari after abandoning his start amid problems shifting gears and the smell of burning oil.
