US Naval Academy ends affirmative action in admissions

The US Court of Appeal ruled that the US Navy Academy (USNA) is no longer able to consider race, ethnicity or sex in accepting Annapolis, Maryland, service institution, following orders by President Donald Trump.

Admiral Ivette Davids changed policy on February 14, noting “neither race or ethnicity nor sex can be considered a factor for admission at any time during the admission process, including rehabilitation and acceptance,” according to the court of the Ministry of Justice (Doj) in the Fourth American Appeals Court, which was submitted to the public.

“Each element of the armed forces must work from any preference on the basis of race or sex,” Trump’s executive order said, and ordered an internal review of service academies in the country.

The decision was followed by a ruling in December in the Federal Court, which allowed the Maritime Academy to continue to consider race in the admission process.

In September, Academy lawyers argued that giving priority to the army “makes it stronger, more effective and more respectable,” according to a report issued by Associated Press.

In December, judges found “military cohesion and other national security factors” means that the school is not subject to the same standards as civil universities, according to the report.

The appeal was presented by the group’s students for just acceptance.

On Friday, the Ministry of Justice requested the suspension of the case because it looked at the change in the USNA policy.

The Ministry of Justice wrote in the deposit: “The parties require a reasonable amount of time to discuss the details of the new policy of the academy and consider the following steps appropriate to this litigation, including whether this litigation is now a discussion of discussion, and if so, whether the provincial court ruling should be evacuated.”

Edward Bloom, head of students for fair admission, called on positive work policies as “unfair and illegal” in a statement of AP.

Blum wrote: “Racial discrimination is wrong and not racist classifications have no place in the academies of our military nation,” Blum wrote.

In February, the academy said that the school takes steps to close all agency diversity, fairness, integration and accessibility (Deia) and end contracts related to Deia according to Trump’s executive orders.

Although Dei and Deia offices have been closed at least 2024, Davids noted, “Fears have raised that some of these programs have been modified in a way that blocks their Deia goals.”

“The US Navy Academy did not have the Dei or Deia office before the executive order of the president who imposed the closure of all agency offices and the end of all contracts related to Deia”, CMDR. Tim Hawkins, a naval spokesperson, told Fox News.
