Mohammed Shami’s international career comes to an end, confirms BCCI
Mohammed Shami’s hopes of returning to the Indian cricket team suffered another setback as he was overlooked for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia. Mohammed Shami has neither been selected in the ODI squad nor in the T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Australia.
Despite Shami’s determination to make a comeback, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is said to be not ready to call up the Indian veteran to the team, not just because of his game but mainly because of his declining performance with the ball.
Mohammed Shami has once again been overlooked for India selection
Shami showed glimpses of his potential earlier this year, taking nine wickets in five matches and playing a key role in India’s victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

But he failed to continue his form in IPL 2025 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and then his recent domestic outing raised doubts about his pace and consistency.
Shami’s figures of just 1/136 from Eastern Zone’s 34 overs in the Duleep Trophy left the BCCI and the national selectors disappointed. Despite this, he has expressed a desire to play in the 2025 ICC World Cup.

But BCCI is cautious due to the 35-year-old’s decline in form. They now want to see Shami perform stronger in domestic cricket before thinking about returning to India.
“At the moment, it is getting more and more difficult for Shami to get back into the Indian team,” The Telegraph quoted a BCCI source as saying. “In the Duleep game too, he was not impressive, except for one strange spell.
Moreover, he is not getting any younger, and in terms of pace too, he does not look to be at his best in Duleep. But to continue in the Indian Premier League, he will have to play a fair amount of domestic matches.

Bengal coach confirms Mohamed Shami’s availability, but CAB is yet to decide
Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami has been made available for Bengal for their 2025 Ranji Trophy opener against Uttarakhand, starting October 15, at Eden Gardens. Even Bengal Lakshmi coach Ratan Shukla has confirmed Shami’s availability, but the Cricket Association of Bangladesh (CAB) is yet to respond to the veteran fast bowler.
“I spoke to Shami six-seven days ago and he expressed his desire to play. So, on our front, we are optimistic regarding his availability (for the Ranji opener),” Shukla stated.
Well, Shami’s performance in the upcoming 2025-2026 Ranji Trophy could be crucial in deciding whether he keeps his India dreams alive or not. However, the CAB will take the final decision when it selects the Bengal squad for the Ranji starter. “We will sit with Lakshmi and discuss all relevant aspects probably on Tuesday,” revealed a senior CAB official.
It is worth noting that Al-Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy in the UAE. He has so far played 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20Is for India and taken 229, 206 and 27 wickets respectively. The Indian star also has an impressive first-class record, having taken over 340 wickets in 90 matches.
