This startup just hit a big milestone for green steel production

Working on this reactor was going on for a while. She got a visit to the facility in Woburn, Massachusetts, in 2022, when it was almost completed. In the following years, the company is working to test it to create other minerals before re -adjusting the steel production.

Boston Mittal approach is completely different from the traditional steel factory. The steel industry usually includes a son -in -law, which uses coal -based fuel called coke to lead the interactions needed to convert iron ore to iron (the main component of the steel). Carbon is collected in coke with associate oxygen from iron ore, which is launched as carbon dioxide.

Instead, the Boston electricity metal is used in a process called electrical analysis of molten oxide (MEE). Iron ore is loaded in a reactor, mixed with other ingredients, then electricity is operated through it, the mixture is heated to about 1600 ° C (2900 ° F) and the reactions needed to make iron. Iron can then be converted into steel.

It is important for the climate, this process emites oxygen instead of carbon dioxide (this notorious greenhouse). If renewable energy such as wind, solar energy or nuclear energy is used as an electricity source, this approach can actually reduce the effect of climate from steel production.

MEE was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Boston Metal was established in 2013 to market technology. Since then, the company has worked to take it from the laboratory scale, with almost the size of a cup of coffee, to a much larger cup that can produce many minerals simultaneously. This is crucial for a manufacturer that works at billions of tons annually.
