Waymo and Uber prepare to launch robotaxi service in Atlanta this summer

Uber invites customers in Atlanta to join a list if they are interested in welcoming Waymo Robotaxi, as companies are preparing to launch a commercial service in the city.

Last September, Uber and Waymo announced plans to provide a roboty -Austin and Atlanta service in early 2025 as part of an expanded partnership. In March, companies began providing “Waymo On Uber” Robotaxi in Austin, about a month after opening a “interest list” to customers.

The companies said on Tuesday that the public will be able to deport in a roboty in Atlanta this summer.

For the two companies, the “Waymo On Uber” service divides the responsibilities of owning and operating a fleet of vehicles without a driver: Uber takes charge, maintaining and cleaning independent vehicles, as well as the management of access to robotics via their application, while Waymo is monitoring technology and self -operations, working on autonomy.

Under the partnership, only Uber users can launch the independent Jaguar I-Pace fleet.

The relationship between the two companies took a turn of 180 degrees from early 2018, when they went to face in a trial that claimed that Uber stole commercial secrets of Waymo. The lawsuit was settled in February 2018.

In the seven years that passed since that settlement, Waymo has connected, developed, tested, and provided the Robotaxi commercial service in Phoenix. The alphabet later expanded its commercial service to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Uber has taken a more fun way to provide a commercial robotics service. After the settlement, Rideshare continued to operate its independent vehicle unit, called Uber Atg, for another two years. He would sell this affiliated in a complex deal with Aurora in December 2020.

But Uber soon began to increase its position in the Robotaxi market emerging through partnership with independent car developers. The company made deals with 14 self-ruling compound companies that cover riding, delivery and trucks-a handful of them commercially. In December, Uber launched a Robotaxi ride in Abu Dhabi with Weide, and independent Waymo vehicles were available on the Uber in Phoenix since October 2023.

Soon after, Atlanta will join the list of growing cities where the locals can build a driver without a driver. The service will initially cover 65 square miles from the city, including areas in the city center, Buckhead, and Capitol View. Companies said there are plans to expand the operating area in the future.

Uber and Waymo said that customers who join the list will receive updates and increase their chances of welcoming proputaki once the service is officially launched. Customers who register early access to Rides Waymo may get before the public, according to companies.

To join, Uber customers in Atlanta need to update the application, then go to “account” and then “Settings”. From there, customers can click on “ride preferences”, where they should see a list that includes independent compounds and a choice to join the interest list.
