West Ham and Tottenham have held discussions about signing former Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of the impending January transfer window, and both sides have now responded.

Tony’s excellent form since his move to Al Ahly is said to have prompted several Premier League clubs to consider bringing him back to English football, with his exceptional goalscoring record defying initial doubts over his £40m move.
The 29-year-old has emphatically silenced the doubters, scoring 42 goals in just 62 appearances in all competitions since arriving in the Gulf state.
His production has led Al-Ahly to success, including their first AFC Champions League victory and winning the Saudi Super Cup after winning on penalties over Al-Nassr, led by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Toni’s memorable hat-trick against 2024 champions Al Hilal marked Al Ahly’s first win over their rivals in eight league matches, with the striker scoring 12 goals in just seven matches during an unusual purple patch.

His performance even briefly earned the Englishman a place back in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad earlier this year, but Toney has struggled to return to contention since then.
With the 2026 World Cup looming, reports have suggested that Toney could return to the Premier League in a bid to force his way into Tuchel’s thoughts ahead of next year’s tournament.
Of all the teams linked with a move for Toney, West Ham and Tottenham stand out among them as the two London clubs are claimed to be searching for attacking options.
Tottenham are said to have held preliminary talks over a deal for Toney already, while West Ham are claimed to have scouted the striker as they look to replace exit-bound Niklas Volkrug.
Now, a report from talkSPORT has shed light on the situation, with Nuno Espirito Santo providing a key update.
West Ham and Tottenham get Ivan Toney’s response after discussions
West Ham and Tottenham have discussed January moves for Toney, but the England striker has made clear his intention to remain in Saudi Arabia, effectively ending hopes of an immediate return to the Premier League.
Sources close to the situation confirm that Toney’s camp has reached out directly to Premier League clubs interested in the striker remaining settled, content and unwilling to push for a transfer.
Al Ahly’s sporting director, Rui Pedro Braz, publicly confirmed this position, insisting that the speculation surrounding a departure in January had no basis in reality, and declaring that the club was counting on Toni moving forward.
In addition, Tony must remain abroad until April 2026 to maintain his non-UK tax residence status. A premature return would result in a significant tax liability of around £14 million.
Al Ahly will also demand more than the £40m they paid for a permanent transfer.
The SPL club will not consider sanctioning Toni’s departure unless they secure an elite-level replacement, something that could be very difficult to do in a limited January window.
At the moment, the odds are stacked against the ‘brilliant’ striker exiting, so West Ham and Tottenham may need to look elsewhere.
According to other reports, West Ham have already made contact over a deal for USG striker Promise David, who could be available for £17.5m.
