Deal struck between US and Mexico to ensure Texas farmers get much-needed water

The Trump administration and Mexican officials reached a deal to ensure that Texas farmers obtained water that is needed from Rio Grande, less than a month after president Donald Trump accused the neighbor in the south of stealing farmers from the water promised under a decades treaty.
US Minister of Agriculture Brock Rollins announced on Monday that the deal was reached with Mexico to meet the current needs of farmers and livestock breeders in Texas as agreed under the Water Treaty in 1944.
Under the last agreement, Mexico committed to sending water from international tanks and increasing the US flow from six Rio Grande tributaries in Mexico during the end of the current five -year bath, which ends in October.
“Mexico finally meets the water needs of farmers and livestock breeders in Texas under the water treaty in 1944, it is a major victory for American agriculture,” said Rollins. “After weeks of negotiations with Mexican Cabinet officials, along with Deputy Foreign Minister Christopher Landau, we got an agreement to give Texas producers the water they need to flourish.”

Rollins described this measure an important step forward, noting that the Trump administration welcomes the continuous operation of Mexico to support American agriculture.
According to the Water Treaty in 1944, Mexico agreed to provide 1.75 million acres over a five -year period to the United States from Rio Grande. On the other hand, the United States agreed to provide 1.5 million acres of water to Mexico from the Colorado River.
But sometimes, Mexico is limited to its connection to the United States, and this has led to a severe shortage of water in the Rio Grande Valley of farmers and livestock, killing crops and jobs with the threat of the local economy.

The agreement comes weeks after Trump threatened to impose a tariff on Mexico, and perhaps even sanctions, if it continues to steal southern Texas farmers in Rio Grande Water as promised under the treaty.
“This is very unfair, and South Texas farmers are hurt very badly,” the president wrote in a post on the social truth on April 10. Last year, the only sugar mill in Texas closed, because Mexico was stealing water from Texas farmers. Ted Cruz leads the battle for South Texas.

Trump continued, saying that he will make sure that Mexico does not violate treaties with the United States and hurt farmers in Texas.
“Only last month, water shipments were stopped to Tijuana until Mexico corresponds to the 1944 water treaty,” he wrote. “My Minister of Agriculture, Brock Rollins, stands with Texas farmers, and we will continue to escalate the consequences, including definitions, and perhaps even sanctions, until Mexico honor the treaty, and we give Texas the water they owe!”
Texas Farm groups warned of a catastrophic season against citrus and sugar last year, as Mexican and United States officials attempted to resolve a dispute over the 1944 treaty that provides American farmers with critical irrigation.

The two countries have faltered on the treaty before, but the lack of water driven by drought was the most severe in nearly 30 years.
